The rumors are circulating about South Carolina's Jadeveon Clowney meeting with rapper/producer/fledgling sports agent Jay Z.
Just to be clear, it is acceptable for agents to talk with players as long as they don't provide any goods or services to them. That includes buying them a cheeseburger, giving them rides in a stretch Hummer, or giving them a copy of their latest CD.
The interesting thing to me about all this is whether meeting a big-time celebrity is considered a "benefit"? Also, was Mrs. Jay-Z in on this meeting? Did Clowney get an autograph?
I know it is against the rules to allow celebrities who are not employed by a university to recruit high school prospects. It is not okay for Nick Saban, for instance, to get Julio Jones to call up a kid and say "sign with Alabama!"
Is it forbidden for sports agent Joe Schmoe to hire rapper 50 Cent to recruit players? Can Mr. Schmoe show up in Columbia, South Carolina with Kate Upton and say he is just there to talk to a guy?
I don't have the answers. I am just wondering. A lot of these young men are impressionable and having a celebrity as a sports agent recruiting amateur athletes is a slippery slope.
