I know everyone is excited about Alabama football and I am too! RTR.. and, that Alabama Basketball doesn't begin officially until November.. Nevertheless, I would like to share just a few thoughts prior to the season.. In hopes of what might be a reality in the near future.. A solid, strong, NCAA tournament basketball team that is competitive with the best in the SEC and the NCAA.. (not just taking Cincinnati to the wire on their home court.. but beating them on their homecourt, going to the NCAA and getting back to the Sweet 16, Elite 8, or even an unprecedented Final 4).. so, here it goes:
I have been an Alabama fan since 1966.. I watched Scott Hunter beat Archie Manning in the epic game on tv.. I cheered for Rah Rah Scott, Charles Cleveland, Reginald King, etc. in basketball games you could only listen to on the radio and have not missed many games since.. I have also played basketball my entire life.. I am also class of '83.. The reason I made this post.. truthfully, is because I was able to watch basketball via ESPN 3 over the course of the 2012-2013 season, and, I begrudgingly have to admit, I have never been more disappointed in the overall Alabama fan base than watching there support for the basketball team during the season.. Regarding basketball fan base: Duke is of course a 10.. no question.. The Univ of South Alabama (where I also graduated from) is a 2 or 3 (maybe a 5 or 6 on a very special night (it is hard for them to get more than a few thousand to a game).. Kansas (where I also graduated from) is typically an 8 or 9.. well, Duke and Kansas are basketball schools.. "GRANTED"... yet, here is my struggle: Auburn, during their dreadful season last year, (as I switched back and forth on ESPN3 or on the radio) was a 6 to 7 and sometimes a 10 (importantly, their cheering fan base NEVER dropped below a 5.. NEVER) and, just to make the implicit, explicit.. I rarely ever give anything remotely close to a compliment to Auburn.. whereas, Alabama, who I live and die by every year in many, many sports.. RTR.. was, in my estimation, anywhere from a 4 to a 5 on average.. "grant"ed, on some days Alabama fans find reason to get excited.. Kentucky is in town, Auburn is here, etc... and the average is a 7 or 8 with decibels at 10 during select segments of the game; yet, game in and game out, last year, again, in my estimation.. Bama basketball fans unfortunately were fair weather fans.. it may be different now at football homecoming.. but it reminded me of the Bryant years during homecoming games.. a given win.. where it was more about just showing up and enjoying the party so to speak.. well, if that is the MO for the game.. so be it.. but here is my concern and my question... why is there this undertone of select criticism related to the basketball team.. if, in fact, based on what I was listening to and watching on ESPN3, where fair whether fans were so-to-speak seeming to say, "show me something to cheer about and then I'll commit.. otherwise.. team.. I am expecting blowouts and wins and NCAA appearances and big game points on the scoreboard and you are disappointing me.. why can't you be like the football team.. I am not cheering for that.. when does the band party start anyway?.. what time are you picking up your date?.. where are you going to eat after the game?... oh... Rele made a shot.. yea.. I guess.. oh, well.. who cares.. I'll just passively complain about what we don't have.. why can't our basketball team be like our football team... (duh)".. well, again, that is your personal choice.. complain and be a pessimist about a sport you truthfully have little inherent interest in anyway.. I know this may have little effect on a partial mind; anyway, my opinion is, a true fan loves their team because it is Alabama.. PERIOD!!! and, will cheer and scream and "fight" till the bitter (or "sweet" 16) tasting end.. Thinking back on "my disappointment" while watching ESPN3 this past season, I really wish the entire student body (not just a small, select few) would find it in themselves to be true ALABAMA fans from start to finish.. and, those who finds basketball a second, third, or fourth choice sport, would find it in themselves to consider changing their selective perspectives and pessimistic forecasting, into more unaltered, full energy based cheering.. I bet if the student body pulled together remotely closer to the fan base at other schools that cheer for most (if not the entire game), you would be pleasantly surprised at not only how much more you enjoy the game.. yet also how much more of an impact you can have on the outcome.. The very, very best to the 2013-2014 Alabama Basketball Team... I cannot wait until the talent from the last few years, coupled with the incoming talent of this year and the 2014 class come together... RTR.. P.S. First, Alabama football.. lets get that NC #3 in a row!
