Who Needs a Blog Poll: Finale

Too bad Tre Mason can't play corner... - Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

Looking back; looking forward (a little bit).

Every year by this time, I am mentally and emotionally exhausted with football. This year was no different, although -for the first time in four years, the season did not end on a positive note. Your consensus national champion (albeit a little shakier than they entered last night's game) is the Florida State Seminoles. After that, it's anyone's game, and about 4-5 teams can make a claim for the #2 spot.

I'm not going to tease all of this out for you except to make a few observations:

  • With wins over USC and Michigan State, Notre Dame quietly had a good rebuilding year.

  • The PAC 12, along with the SEC, had an excellent bowl season overall, showing that the conference strength was not exaggerated. Like the SEC, the PAC 12 also had very favorable bowl matchups.

  • James Franklin, should he stay, has built a very good foundation at Vanderbilt. While talent will still be there, that team plays for him and I'm not certain they maintain this excellence without Franklin

  • Another putrid, putrid showing for the Big Ten. Ohio State -yes, short injuries and suspensions, can no longer be considered the standard-bearer for the league. That title belongs to the defense-minded Michigan State Spartans, who are set up for a sustained run. And, I still think Wisconsin is very very good. Also, good work by Pelini to save his job in the last month of the season.

  • Good lord, South Carolina, when is Spurrier retiring? I'm not comfortable living in a world with the Gamecocks and Missouri Tigers as Top 10 teams.

  • We are about to see what kind of coaching Sumlin can actually do: down yet more stud OL, Mike Evans, Johnny Manziel, etc. his job gets harder: Alabama, LSU, Auburn aren't going anywhere. Mississippi State is improving rapidly, and Ole Miss already matches up well with the Aggies.

  • North Dakota State beat Towson for its third straight FCS title, and 24th win in a row. This team could beat half the Top 25. We'll see what happens with Bohl's departure to Wyoming.

Feel free to chime in below. Thanks for sticking around this season.
