Well after a two hour bus trip to Montgomery and five hours of sitting around on Tuesday, the Tide (with me in tow) loaded the bus back up and came home to Tuscaloosa. Now we are to load the bus again at 2 p.m. on Wednesday and go back and try again. The trip was nice, as the staff played a Mariano Rivera tribute movie for the boys on the way down. The tribute was very well done and showed all sides of the iconic pitcher.
Upon arriving, the team (and I was included in all this) were provided box lunches and relaxed in the club house while checking on the rain periodically. The boys were in the dressing room and I was hanging out mostly in the coaches office(s). Once it was determined that batting practice would not be held outside the boys got ready and held BP in the indoor batting cage. The cage was surprisingly small for a AA team and Alabama and Auburn had to take turns in the one shoot facility.
After finishing the Biscuit executives told the coaches that there would be no in and out (infield-outfield) practice. I was able to go out on the field and get my arm warmed up to be ready for my first pitch duties. After playing catch for about 15 minutes, the rain continued to fall and we were told they were going to aim for 7:30 to start. About 6:45 p.m. we were told that we would try for 8, but if not then we were to head home for the night. By 8 o'clock it was determined that there would not be a game, so we loaded up and headed home. The trip was quiet, as the boys were into their phones and laptops. I watched the Bama-Kentucky basketball game on my iPad on the trip back.
Now I will go back on the bus with the team tomorrow, and hopefully get to throw out the first pitch. But more importantly help the Tide grab their first win in this Classic. Auburn has won all five of the contests that have been played. Hopefully soon, if they keep this game, we can move the 'Bama home game to the new Barons park in Birmingham and leave the Barns home game in Montgomery. I know they couldn't call it the Capital City Classic anymore but it would even up the travel advantage that the boogs enjoy now. Hope for a clear night!
