Alabama Baseball- Wade Wass signs FA deal

After not being drafted in June's MLB draft, Bama catcher-DH Wade Wass loaded up his equipment and headed to the Cape Cod league, hoping to impress some scouts and ink a free agent deal. It didn't take long for that to happen. After a career game on Wednesday - two grand slams and a double with nine RBIs, the scrutiny by the scouts intensified. Wass was drafted in the 8th round out of JUCO and chose to come to Bama in the hopes of having one big year and going higher as a junior. The best laid plans of mice and men got the best of him. In spring scrimmage he was hit on the ankle with a pitch and suffered a broken bone. After surgery and five weeks of rehab, he came back and had a pinch hitting appearance vs Tennessee, and on the only swing he took all year he broke his wrist. Another surgery followed and Wass rehabbed all summer. In fall practice he had a knee scoped that was giving him trouble. He was able to bounce back and a solid year as the Tides clean up hitter, serving as DH about half the time and catching the other games. Surprisingly, he was not taken, but his hot performance in The Cape led the Angels to offer him. Wass said that "he had a few teams interested but the Angels had the biggest need at catcher,"so he jumped at their offer. Although it would have been a big plus for Bama to return Wass, this is the best thing for him at his age and this juncture of his career. Wish him the best of luck and I think he has a chance to move forward in the Angels organization. RTR
