Film Room: Tim Williams

Tim Williams. - Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

ed. - bumped from fanposts. This is a nice series.

Tim Williams was a 4 star recruit out of University Lab in Baton Rouge. Alabama plucked him literally right out of LSU’s campus. He was the #82 overall prospect, the #2 weak defensive end, and #3 in Louisiana. Williams spent his first two seasons as a deep back-up, recording just 8 tackles and 1.5 sacks. He was in Saban’s dog house for a good bit but finally seemed to turn the corner before his junior year. Still a back-up in 2015, Williams came onto the field on clear passing downs and was an absolute force, sacking opposing quarterbacks 10.5 times. He decided to return to Tuscaloosa for his senior season, and he’ll finally be a starter in 2016.

Georgia

2nd and 10: Georgia is on their 39 yard line with 26 seconds left in the half. The rout is already on, but the Dawgs are in striking distance to score before half. Tim Williams is the left defensive end lined up on the outside of the right tackle. He gets a good jump off the snap but doesn’t beat the RT. Reggie Ragland, on the other hand, was lined up at the other DE spot and embarrasses LT John Theus (who went in the 5th round). Ragland makes the initial contact on QB Bryce Ramsey but can’t bring him down. Williams kept his eyes on Ramsey, though; and he was able to come off his block and clean up with a 3 yard sack, which brought the half to an end.

3rd and 9: Williams explodes off the snap and sticks to the outside. He jams his left arm inside the chest of LT Denver Kirkland and pulls him off balance. Williams keeps running through Kirkland as he falls to the ground, and he brings down Brandon Allen.

Texas A&M

3rd and 10: Texas A&M has driven down inside Bama’s 15 yard line, and the score is fairly close at 34-20. Alabama rushes three and drops eight. Williams doesn’t win with speed on his rush, so he tries to counter back inside but is shut down by the RT. He then tries and fails to rip through the block, but that too doesn’t work. The coverage is smothering, however; and Allen is forced to scramble with no one to throw to. Williams sees this and spins away from the RT, and he finally gets to the quarterback for the sack. Not exactly the greatest example of handwork, but it does show how relentless Williams is.

Mississippi State

3rd and 18: Williams sees his first snap of the game in a clear passing down. Lined up at LDE, he takes one step outside before cutting back inside. The RT isn’t fooled and gives him a good shove to the RG. The guard tries to pick up the block but isn’t quite ready for him, and Williams keeps his feet moving and has a lane to QB Dak Prescott. Williams sees Prescott about to throw and gets his right hand up. Prescott smartly holds the ball and takes off past Williams, but Da’Ron Payne and Rashaan Evans don’t let him get far.

3rd and 7: Williams is over the LT. WR Fred Ross motions into the backfield, and Prescott has the option to keep it or hand off to Ross. Both Williams and Da’Shawn Hand (the other DE) are unblocked. Williams stays home on Prescott, who makes the wrong call and keeps it instead of handing off and probably getting a huge gain. Williams and Hand crash into Prescott from either side and get the stop.

3rd and 7: Williams is on the outside of the RT. He gets off well and bull rushes the RT tackle, getting both hands in his chest and staggering him and back. Allen beat his man inside and is already in Prescott’s face, and Williams joins him. They force a hurried pass. Mississippi State punts, and Cyrus Jones takes it to the house for the first points of the game.

3rd and 8: Williams is at RDE. He tries a club move on on the LT, but it doesn’t work. He does do a good job of keeping the tackle at enough of a distance so he doesn’t get tangled up. The pocket disappears as Prescott steps up into it. Williams follows him, and Prescott actually moves towards him. Williams is happy to grab ahold of him, and Ryan Anderson and Dalvin Tomlinson join in.

3rd and 5: Williams is lined up as a 9 technique (wide 9) on the outside shoulder of the tight end. He counters the right tackle’s attempt to stop him with a punch, dips his shoulder, and gets around him. Prescott turns and runs, but there’s no escaping the freight train that is Tim Williams on this one. Williams drags him down for the sack. The ball came out and was initially ruled a fumble, and on the ensuing return, a State player was flagged for a personal foul. The sack alone would’ve moved them out of long field goal range, though.

1st and 10: Williams lines up at LDE. State runs an option, and back-up QB Nick Fitzgerald hands off to the running back after Da’Shawn Hand stays on Fitzgerald. Williams shoves the RT aside with ease and pops the RB for a loss of one.

LSU

3rd and 8: Williams lines up at LDE. LSU sends WR Travin Dural in motion left to right to set up trips on that side, and Harris rolls out that way. I’m curious about Williams' first step here. Initially, he looks to be slow off the snap; but there’s a chance he was told to watch what RT Jerald Hawkins (4th round draft pick) did and key off that. Hawkins takes a step right, and then Williams goes. I’m inclined to think it was just a slow start because I haven’t noticed that on other plays. Either way, he beats Hawkins with speed and gets around him, and he wraps up QB Brandon Harris. Reggie Ragland comes in to clean it up, and each of them get half a sack.

Auburn

http://imgur.com/Q9xYkD4

1st and 10: Auburn has an untimed down at the end of half after Ronnie Harrison was flagged for roughing the kicker. Alabama only brings four, while Auburn has SEVEN blockers. Williams is picked up by the right tackle, but he fights free from the block and cuts inside. RB Peyton Barber screwed up and was out of position, leaving Williams a nice, clear lane to QB Jeremy Johnson, who just crumples to the ground rather than take the hit.

3rd and 10: Williams is lined up at LDE. He fires off the snap and smacks the RT’s hands away. The tackle gets a hand on him again, but Williams rips free as he gets past and forces Jeremy Johnson down for a 9 yard loss.

2nd and 10: Williams is again at LDE. He bull rushes the RT and knocks him off balance and flashes a beautiful spin move that puts him right next to Johnson, who does get the pass off; but it ends up getting tipped.

3rd and 20: I would say Williams is at his usual LDE, but I believe he was in the offensive huddle for this one. Before the center even snaps the ball, he’s off to the races. By the time QB Treon Harris has the ball, Williams has won.http://imgur.com/fXSrPhw

The right tackle has barely had time to move, and Williams is already almost past him. The tackle has no shot, and neither does Harris.

http://imgur.com/xS368x5

3rd and 18: Williams fakes going outside before planting his left foot and cutting back inside the RT, who again has no chance. RB Jordan Cronkite does a great job of picking Williams up and shoving him to the ground. TE Jake McGee and Cronkite then double team him as he gets up. Not in on the play, but good use of the inside move and great hustle.

3rd and 10: Williams explodes off the snap and leaves the RT vainly reaching after him. Jordan Cronkite does a good job of stoning Williams, and the tackle gets back after him as well. He doesn’t show up on the stat sheet, but he forced Harris to stop looking downfield and start scrambling. Reuben Foster eventually brings him down for a yard loss.

4th and 11: Williams’ speed is ridiculous. We’ve seen it over and over, and we see it once more here. He blows past the right tackle and sends Harris scrambling. Williams misses the sack at first, but Harris comes back right and trips over Williams.

Michigan State

3rd and 10: Williams fakes outside and cuts back in across the chest of the right tackle. The right guard also comes to block him, but Williams knifes between them and gets through with a swim move. He doesn’t get to QB Connor Cook, but it’s a helluva effort. Pass ends up incomplete, and Sparty punts.

https://youtu.be/CF5CaMFtSD0?t=25m41s

3rd and 12: Williams goes outside on the RT, who handles it; but he rips off a pretty spin move that flings the tackle to the ground and leaves him right next to Cook. He wraps him up; and as Cook is going to the ground, he just chucks it away and gets called for intentional grounding.

Clemson

https://youtu.be/zeSw3Tc4Ts4?t=2m47s

3rd and 10: Williams is at LDE; and he tries his inside move, which is picked up easily by the right tackle and guard. He stays at arm’s length from the blocker, which allows him to disengage and pursue the scrambling QB Deshaun Watson. Watson completes the pass for a Clemson first down. Williams had no counter for when his first move failed, but he never gave up. I love the motor.

https://youtu.be/zeSw3Tc4Ts4?t=6m4s

3rd and 5: Williams is surprisingly in on a third and medium; and, to double down how rare this play is, he goes out in coverage. Alabama only has two down linemen with three linebackers standing near the line, threatening blitz. On the snap, Williams immediately moves to cover RB Wayne Gallman. It’s a very short amount of time, but he does a fine job.http://imgur.com/mpLjEuk

Pass interference on Reuben Foster gives the Tigers a first down though.

https://youtu.be/zeSw3Tc4Ts4?t=26m7s

3rd and 9: Williams is standing up on the left side. He takes a couple steps forward before stunting inside; and he blows past the RG, who had been blocking D.J. Pettway initially. Watson gets the pass off with Williams right in his face, and Ronnie Harrison does an outstanding job of getting his hand in and breaking up the pass to prevent a touchdown.

https://youtu.be/zeSw3Tc4Ts4?t=42m50s

1st and 10: Williams has his hand in the dirt at left defensive end. He gets his right hand inside the RT Joe Gore’s chest and clubs him with his left. Watson has to step up in the pocket to avoid Williams, and Rashaan Evans slices in between two blockers to get the sack. Great play by Williams to help set up his teammate.

A-Day

https://youtu.be/7PAVm6foj_A?t=11m29s

3rd and 4: Williams is at RDE and is facing Korren Kirven at LT. He swats away Kirven’s hands and gets around him, forcing Bateman to scramble to the right and ultimately throw the ball in the dirt.

https://youtu.be/7PAVm6foj_A?t=26m32s

1st and 10: Williams is standing outside true freshman RT Jonah Williams, who, for some ungodly reason, tries to block TIM WILLIAMS with just his right arm. He even has his attention focused to the left, despite the fact the play is supposed to roll right. The results are predictable. Williams brushes off the laughable attempted block and blows past Bo Scarbrough, who had no time to get in a position to stop Williams. David Cornwell is sacked.https://youtu.be/7PAVm6foj_A?t=39m42s

3rd and 15: Williams is back at right defensive end against Korren Kirven. He gets upfield, rips out of Kirven’s block, and grabs a handful of Cooper Bateman’s jersey for the sack. Would it have been a sack in a real game where he actually had to tackle him? Possibly. Still, good first step and good technique in the pass rush.

https://youtu.be/7PAVm6foj_A?t=1h14m6s

3rd and 7: Williams has his hand in the dirt at RDE. He beats Kirven badly and forces Bateman to throw it into the dirt. Williams doesn’t do anything face; he just wins with his hands and gets around him.
