Linebacker Recruit Reuben Foster Suffers Leg Injury At The Opening - SBNation.com

29

Reuben Foster continues to make his way into the recruiting headlines, this time for a pretty unfortunate reason. He went down with a hamstring injury running the 40 and had to be carried off. As for the long term impact, I doubt it will do much to end his recruiting hype, but stuff like this always makes you (and surely high profile recruits) wonder if the risk of injury at these kind of combines is really worth the reward. Foster is already rated the #3 prospect in the country and is already committed to Alabama with plenty of other scholarship offers available should he change his mind. You like to see that your incoming players have a competitive mentality and want to test themselves against the best in the country, but at a certain point you kind of have to think if you've already got your scholarship in hand there's no need to risk your future.

"Dixie Howell, the human howitzer from Hartford, Ala., blasted the Rose Bowl dreams of Stanford today with one of the greatest all-around exhibitions football has ever known." Here's a little video evidence of what Grantland Rice was talking about that day. Read the brief description below the video to see who's who. Remember the Rose Bowl (we'll win). Roll Tide.

This is a letter from Alabama head coach Paul Bryant to sportswriter Murray Olderman in 1962. It references a series of ghostwritten columns Olderman produced for the Newspaper Enterprise Association in the wake of Bryant leading the Crimson Tide to the 1961 National Championship. These "as told to" pieces were relatively common at the time and Bryant's autobiography resulted from a similar collaboration with Sports Illustrated's John Underwood. I went back into the GoogleNews Archive and was actually able to dig up this series of articles (although it's unclear how much the paper cut them down from the original versions). One of them, Alabama's Call Postpones Bryant's Retirement, appeared on Oct. 20, about seven weeks after the letter above was dated. It's interesting for the revelation in the title -- Bryant claimed that until he was contacted by Alabama he was actually aiming to step down as a Texas A&M's head coach when his contract expired in '61 to "go into something less ulcerous." That piece was preceded by Bama Not Competing With Pros Who Don't Graduate Every Year and followed with Bear Bryant Gets Most Out of Ordinary Players. A fourth item, Bear Remembers Auburn Game, was published the first week of November.

It might also explain why Alvarez disclosed this week that there were recent discussions, orchestrated by ESPN, about matching the Badgers against defending national champion and Southeastern Conference power Alabama at a neutral site. Alvarez, who handled scheduling when he coached the Badgers from 1990 to ’05, said Bielema countered with an offer to play a home-and-home series with the Crimson Tide — no specific years were discussed — but that Alabama coach Nick Saban declined.

UW football: Bielema, Alvarez talk about scheduling upgrade : Sports Go ahead and get ready for every media outlet and slack jawed yokel to decry Alabama turning this down and bash the SEC's OOC scheduling while blithely ignoring the fact that Alabama has neutral site openers against Michigan and Virginia Tech the next two season and then a home-and-home series with Michigan State. Come talk to us in 2017, maybe we can squeeze you in. Update/Further Thoughts: The Michigan State series is set for 2016-2017, so that does leave a gap of 2014-2015 where we'll be looking for a marquee OOC opponent. Gut instinct is that the SEC will be moving to a nine game conference schedule in the next few years, and couple that with the original ESPN orchestrated talks of neutral site game being countered with a home-and-home series and it makes sense to turn it down. With the uncertainty of just how future SEC scheduling is going to work out, plus the playoffs starting in 2014 with all its uncertainty and the inevitable growing pains, the wait and see approach is the smart one. Update/FURTHER Further Thoughts: I'd forgotten about the 2014 opener against West Virginia that was recently announced, so that leaves Alabama without a marquee OOC for only one season between now and 2017. Dollars to donuts the neutral site game ESPN was trying to set up was a 2015 opener, but Bielema's counter of a home-and-home scuttled the deal.
