The Jumbo Package: 08-13-10

Not much to report from practice yesterday beyond what you could all probably guess (Kendall Kelly still out, Blake Sims still working at RB), but with a scrimmage tomorrow there should be some...

"I know you think I’m avoiding the question on this one, but I really don’t know who’s going to be the quarterback," Paterno said. One week into practice, and the race between sophomores Kevin Newsome and Matt McGloin to replace record-setting QB Daryll Clark is still apparently at a dead heat. And freshmen Robert Bolden and Paul Jones apparently aren’t out of the mix, either, according to quarterbacks coach Jay Paterno, the head coach’s son.

I think Gentry Estes nicely sums up the problem we have at quarterback. McElroy generally protects the football well and plays to our offensive strengths, but he is entirely too tentative when it comes to throwing the ball downfield, and in any event when he chooses to do so the results generally aren't very good. McCarron would definitely fix that problem... he'd air it out and I don't think there is any doubt the effectiveness of our vertical passing attack would increase exponentially. Of course, though, the problem is he'd probably have a lot more turnovers and wouldn't manage the game as well. I get the bad feeling that it is somewhat of a lose-lose situation... we need someone who can consistently stretch the field vertically while protecting the football, and right now I'm not sure that either McElroy or McCarron fit that mold.

[Darius] Hanks said today he received word "about a month ago" from the NCAA that he had been granted a redshirt year for 2007, during which he played roughly 14 snaps in the season opener against Western Carolina.

Gentry Estes: Tide receiver Darius Hanks gets a year of eligibility back on appeal Awesome news. That gives both Maze and Hanks two more years on campus. A bit unexpected, really.

Unfortunate news, as Jeramie Griffin is now headed for a medical scholarship after a season ending injury last year that also kept him out of spring practice and has thus far kept him from reporting to fall camp.

POLL: Which Alabama Underclassman Is Going to Shine in 2010?

The depth of talent at Alabama these days makes it unlikely an underclassman will eclipse the veterans like in years past. But Freshmen and Sophomores can certainly make their mark. This week's poll asks which one will be turning heads this fall.

"We're excited we get to go knock them around," kicker Harrison Waid said, according to The San Jose Mercury News. "If we can beat them we'll remember it for the rest of our lives no matter what else happens."

USA Today: San Jose State kicker: 'We're excited we get to go knock' Alabama around Awesome. I'm sure our guys are just shaking in fear at the sight of this gridiron beast. Going to be fun watching this guy figure out we ain't exactly Cal Poly.
