How many seats does
MSU's stadium have?  I seem to remember it being smaller than, say, Vaught or Arkey stadium, maybe around Vandy's size.

It's significantly bigger than Vandy's
Vandy holds 39,773. MSU holds 55,082.

Vandy...

The official capacity is listed as 55,082.

Arkansas and Ole Miss bigger
Arkansas's Razorback Stadium holds 72,000. Ole Miss's Vaught-Hemingway Stadium holds 60,850.

MSU's stadium is the second smallest in the SEC, bigger than only Vanderbilt. Interestingly enough though, MSU's stadium is one of the oldest in the country.

While I prefer...
...Nashville to Starkville (no duh, right?), I'd rather go to Davis Wade Stadium than Vanderbilt Stadium purely as stadiums.

Agree
Three free points!  And then the defense did a good job of holding them, and a bad State punt puts us in good position.

GO RASHAD!  Mr. Interception!

As a Alabama fan who went to State, I do always have bittersweet feelings about us HAVING to demolish the Bulldogs. C'est la vie.  GO BAMA!

And, Davis-Wade is a good stadium.  Not huge, but I like it.  You can easily heer the cowbells on the radio broadcast.

And--a facemask!

Never quit. It is the easiest cop-out in the world.

ok i'm going to
probably sound stupid here....but do the cowbells stand for anything other than noise makers???  is it a tradition for Miss. State??

by imaBamafan on Nov 10, 2007 12:28 PM CST reply actions

Kinda...
From MSU's Wiki:

"Cowbells are significant part of any Mississippi State University experience. The tradition began after a jersey cow wandered on to the football field in the early 1900s, disrupting a game. Subsequently, State won the football game and the cow became a symbol of good luck. Eventually, the cow was replaced with just the cow's bell. Handles were welded onto the bells to ease ringing and are now manufactured and sold specifically as athletic noisemakers."

So yeah, it's a tradition. Kind of.

by outsidethesidelines on Nov 10, 2007 12:44 PM CST up reply actions

thanks
for the info....I was kinda thinking maybe it was some kind of tradition since the announcers were mentioning the cowbells.

State playing tough...
State is playing tough, and they've gotten very lucky with two fumbles recovered deep in their own end.

We're in good shape as long as we don't turn it over, and a 9-0 lead is pretty good.

We just need a stop and a touchdown and we'll be in great shape.

by outsidethesidelines on Nov 10, 2007 12:35 PM CST reply actions

Carroll
Carroll has made a few nice throws, but we've rattled him fairly well. We picked off a pass early, and got a couple of sacks and big hits on him. We're playing him like we need to at the moment.

We're containing Dixon pretty well, too. We're getting a lot of people in the box, and our big linebacker corps is helping a lot to stop his physical style.

MSU driving now.

by outsidethesidelines on Nov 10, 2007 12:37 PM CST reply actions

Amost picked!
Rashad Johnson almost got another pick, but that would have had us inside the five. Honestly, assuming we can stop them on third down, it's probably a good thing he couldn't hang on.

by outsidethesidelines on Nov 10, 2007 12:39 PM CST reply actions

Nevermind...
Easy completion on a post over the middle in front of Carter. I don't know if Carter got too much depth or what, but the MSU receiver found a massive hole in the middle of the zone. No real way Carroll could have missed him there.

by outsidethesidelines on Nov 10, 2007 12:40 PM CST up reply actions

9-3 Lead
Nice kick by the MSU kicker and it's 9-3.

A nice long touchdown drive would be nice from the offense. Hasn't happened since John Kerry was last running for president, so we're due.

He's 8-17 for 68 yards. That's 47% completion and less than 5 yards per attempt.

This is how State wins...
Play tough defense, limit opposing offenses to field goals and punts... and then wait for the opposing team to make dumbass mistakes.

How in the holy hell can that kid not get it in his head that he must protect the football?

I mean it's one thing that the passing game is shit (8-17 for 68 yards), but you can at least protect the damn football when you have it third and goal from the one with time running out in the half.

Something major has to change and it has to change fast. This is a two possession game for us, we need a quick score.

And it's so obvious that as much as we are running the ball, despite little to no success, that the coaching staff has no confidence in Wilson's passing ability at the moment.

Wilson is now 13-30 for 93 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions.

which just goes to show...

Exactly
He's breaking records, yet he's at the very bottom of the SEC in passing efficiency.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out what's going on there.

by outsidethesidelines on Nov 10, 2007 2:18 PM CST up reply actions

JPW
I think his inability to make reads quickly combined with the two interceptions today has him scared to pull the trigger. He had men open on all three plays but hesistated.

by figtide on Nov 10, 2007 2:16 PM CST reply actions

Being brutally honest...
Just being brutally honest, Mississippi State just needs to not beat themselves with turnovers. I really don't think our offense can score the eight points needed to win this thing.

by outsidethesidelines on Nov 10, 2007 2:17 PM CST reply actions

JPW
He must have missed QB 101 at orientation. The primary job of a QB at Alabama is to not lose the game for your team.

Honestly, Lowe looks every bit as good as Grant. And honestly he may be a bit better, he's definitely quicker.

by outsidethesidelines on Nov 10, 2007 2:23 PM CST up reply actions

Running the ball...
We're running the ball on second and short situations. At this point, the coaching staff is just having to take first downs any way they can get them.

And there goes a completion to Hall. That's like two completions in a row, so we must be due for a bad play.

Nice run by Lowe and we are driving. Even a field goal would be a good thing here.

You keep calling that delayed draw and it's only a matter of time before they jump on it. That's at least the third or fourth time we've ran that this drive alone.

They're vulnerable in the middile of the field with the depth the safeties are playing. We need to get the tight ends or the slot guy involved between the hashes.

Nice kick, but...
That was a nice kick by Tiffin and now we are within 5, but we're still in major trouble.

We need a stop and a touchdown to win, and we have to do it all in just around six minutes.

As Chris Farley would say, "NOT GOOD!"

by outsidethesidelines on Nov 10, 2007 2:25 PM CST reply actions

We need a big stop and we need it very fast. We need a three and out.

Last year MSU had the ball late like this and ran out the clock. We cannot do that this year.

I tell you, he is having confidence issues right now with believing what he sees in the defense. We needed to press the middile of the field, but I'm not sure JPW is capable right now from a confidence standpoint.

So much for the good defense, because it has looked terrible this drive.

At this point, the offense is going to have to drive a mile at the very end with extremely little amount of time left.

Wow
Been watching Bama play since the 60s, and that's quite possible the worst single game performance ever.  John Parker Wilson is not an SEC quarterback.  And I know Saban didn't choose him, but it's way past time for a change.  Three straight dives into the line at the end of the first half and we win the game, even if we have to settle for a field goal.  They never did move the ball to score on us.  It's all on Wilson.  You CANNOT take that sack. He was really adept at throwing the ball out of bounds the rest of the game...why not there?  Bring on McElroy.

by Watchman on Nov 10, 2007 2:48 PM CST reply actions

JPW
The good news is we only have one more year of him.

Just think if he and Brodie could switch birthdays. I would love to have traded JPW for Brodie this year. We might have won every game considering all of our losses were determined to a great extent by poor decision making/throws by the QB.

by imaBamafan on Nov 10, 2007 3:17 PM CST up reply actions

Depleted and Mediocre
Having a great head coach(that WILL do great things) does not overcome a depleted depth chart(minus 5 who break the rules at the expense of their team), and a quarterback that is mediocre at best.  Why not cut our losses and give the other QB's a chance.  JPW's days are numbered as being a starter anyway.

by russellc on Nov 10, 2007 3:20 PM CST reply actions

Just a thought...
If Wilson were even mediocre, we'd have beaten FSU and MSU. The way this kid has played the past two weeks, he needs a pair of damn good binoculars just to stare up at mediocre.

by outsidethesidelines on Nov 10, 2007 3:24 PM CST up reply actions

Good Point
He's not as good of a QB as Rush Propst is hiding a secret family.

by russellc on Nov 10, 2007 3:27 PM CST up reply actions

Hmm...
Well, I suppose you have to figure that if Propst could cover up a secret family for like a decade, he could definitely cover up Wilson's crappy abilities for three years as a starter at Hoover.

by outsidethesidelines on Nov 10, 2007 3:32 PM CST up reply actions

Hell I could
start at Hoover being old and out of shape as I am and I could win a State Championship with their team.
