Georgia Tech and UGA are among the four finalists for the AJC’s Mr. Basketball, Westlake High’s Marcus Thornton revealed on Thursday night. Alabama and a surprise school (Texas) are among Thornton’s short list of finalists. He eliminated Clemson, Kentucky, and Michigan from consideration, and plans on signing by May 21. [...] Thornton is in the process of setting up visits to Georgia Tech and UGA within the next 10 days. He has already made trips to Alabama and Texas. [...] Alabama’s Anthony Grant has the longest established relationship with Thornton out of the four finalists, if that counts for anything. Texas was considered a longshot at the beginning, but has made tremendous strides under coach Rick Barnes. However, distance could be a factor with Texas.

Michael Carvell | Atlanta Journal-Constitution Well, here we are down to four, and Bama is still alive for one of the nation's hottest recruits. With one scholarship left to give before the signing deadline on May 19, there is no doubt Thornton is our #1 target.

"I'll never forget the yellow legal pad Saban had with him, " Jacobs said. "He was full of questions. It was like he was interviewing us. He had spoken to Bill Arnsparger, who had coached LSU for three years. He wondered why LSU had gone so long without winning a national championship. Joe told him so had Florida until they hired Steve Spurrier. "Saban got right to the point. He said he would have a much better chance winning a national championship at LSU than he would at Michigan State. It went on for three hours. Finally, Saban is saying, 'At LSU, I'll win an SEC championship in three years and I'll win a national championship in five. "Suddenly, Mark Emmert is looking at Nick Saban, he's telling everyone in the room, 'I want you to be the next head coach at LSU.' Next thing you know, the chancellor is calling Joe Dean aside. He's telling him to work everything out with Jimmy Sexton. He's saying, 'ask him how much he wants. I don't want any negatives.' "

One of the Penn State bloggers on PennLive.com (the Keystone State's equivalent of al.com) got wind of our recent poll about possible losses in the 2010 schedule and weren't too happy about the results. In fact, they are so committed to regaining their program's lost glory they have already have a blueprint to beat the Crimson Tide on Sept. 11.

Former Alabama great Keith McCants arrested on drug charges

3

The standout linebacker for Alabama in the late 1980s was arrested on warrants for attempting to purchase drugs in Mobile. McCants was a beast for the Tide rolling up 118 tackles and three sacks on his way to consensus All-American honors in 1989. He was selected by Tampa Bay with the fourth pick of the 1990 draft but difficulties transitioning to the pro game and injuries had him out of the league within a few years.

Per text message from kid, Cullman OL Spencer Region has opened his recruitment back up.

Twitter: Shane Youngblood Apparently Region is saying now that he did not de-commit, but that he is now undecided. Sounds all like some not-so-nuanced world play, and frankly he's open now. As I speculated in the earlier fanpost on Region, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he ended up committing to 'Bama, but I will reiterate again here that if he does so I imagine it will be as a greyshirt. We'll see what happens, but after this I kind of tend to think he won't end back up at Auburn. And again, regardless of what may be officially said when / if he commits to 'Bama, I'd bet good money it will be as a greyshirt offer. After his shenanigans a couple of months back, regardless of our staff's evaluation of him as a prospect, I don't think our staff will trust him enough to give him a definite spot in the 2011 class (which could cost us another player somewhere else if he flips out again). To hedge our risk, we'll make him a greyshirt if he wants to come aboard.

From the Rumble Seat: Defending Bobby Dodd

20

Recently, the SB Nation website covering Georgia Tech, From the Rumble Seat, received an email from an irate Alabama fan who was none to pleased with their selective memory concerning the Yellow Jacket's famed former coach Bobby Dodd's policy toward excessive brutality on the football field. FTRS responded much as you might expect from the representatives of the Georgia Institute of Technology - with a bit of researching and an exel spreadsheet.

Billingsley: Alabama 2009 Is The Best Ever

13

Richard Billingsley, over at the College Football Research Center, has put together a new version of the top 200 teams in the history of college football and Alabama's 2009 squad is the new No. 1. The ranking is compiled from is compiled from the records of all 11,121 teams who have taken the field since 1869 and compares the squads by what was actually accomplished on the field of play relative to the schedule played. Needless to say... our compatriots over at the Nebraska Cornhusker blog Corn Nation are none to pleased to see their 1971 team bumped out of the top slot.
