Time to back up all that smack talk, people.

Another season is almost the books, and it’s time for America’s favorite March idyll — bracket pick ‘em.

The Pick’ Em this year is on Yahoo! Sports and uses progressive scoring, weighing later round picks heavier than early rounds. It keeps the game more interesting because a bad first round or two won’t necessarily doom you later down the road.
It’s kept a lot of our competitions remarkably competitive, so no need to reinvent the wheel here.

Your latest Crimson Tide news and notes.

Happy Monday, everyone. Baseball was the bright spot of the weekend as they took two of three from top ranked Tennessee. The one loss came on Friday, and what an awful day that was. Both basketball teams were trounced out of the SEC Tournament, softball lost, and baseball suffered that 11-3 defeat. The softball team did manage to salvage one of the three in Athens. Gymnastics lost at Oklahoma yesterday, which is to be expected, but they did score a very strong 198 in the process. The Sooners are just on another l evel from everyone else.

As you already know, Nate Oats’ squad was deemed a 4-seed with a pretty favorable draw. Women’s basketball landed an 8-seed and will face Florida State.

With Alabama women’s basketball’s NCAA tournament first round matchup against Florida State now official, the Crimson Tide will look to advance in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2020-21 and potentially make its first Sweet 16 appearance since 1997-98.

The Crimson Tide had its best season under coach Kristy Curry in 2023-24, winning 10 conference games for the first time since the 1997-98 season and finishing in fourth place in the conference for the first time in Curry’s tenure.

Clear out your Friday evening schedule as the ladies will play at ~4:30pm CT on ESPN2, and should finish up about the time the men tip off at ~6:35 pm CT on TruTV. Let’s hope this Friday is better than the last one. Nate Oats’ experience from the other side should pay dividends headed into the opening round matchup.

“We’re treating it like it’s a whole new season and we’re playing a really good team,” Oats said. “I’ve been on the other side of this. I’ve been a 13-seed playing a four at Buffalo and came in and beat Arizona, so I’ve got a pretty good idea of the mindset of that group. And they’re hungry. I’m sure they can’t wait to play us. They’re excited.”

The game is scheduled for Friday at 6:35 p.m. CT in Spokane. Oats said he was happy with the time and date, noting that playing on Friday helpful for the team to be rested and healthy.

If Alabama shows up, that won’t be a contest. You can bet that Nate will be drilling that into their heads all week.

Nate is losing his fourth assistant in two seasons to a head coaching opportunity.

“I am extremely excited to welcome Austin Claunch as our next head men’s basketball coach,” Campos said. “He had great success as the head coach at Nicholls and has gained valuable experience at some of the top programs in the country. He has high energy, a relentless work ethic and a strong basketball IQ. What really stood out to me is that when we talked to people about Austin, what kept coming up time and again was his unique ability to connect with people from all backgrounds and build great relationships. He is completely aligned with my vision and our values as a department and an institution. He will be a terrific leader of our student-athletes and I am confident he will elevate our program to new heights.”

In his lone season with Alabama, Claunch has helped the Crimson Tide to a 21-11 record and an Associated Press Top-25 national ranking. Alabama currently sits at No. 9 in the latest NCAA NET rankings.

I don’t take it lightly, and when it came down to the decision-making process, I wanted this opportunity. It’s something I wasn’t shying away from. I’m attacking it.”

The 12th ranked Alabama Crimson Tide defeated the 5th ranked Tennessee Vols two games to one in Tuscaloosa this weekend.

The 12th ranked Alabama Crimson Tide hosted the 5th ranked Tennessee Volunteers this weekend in the opening series of SEC play. After a shaky start, losing game one 11-3, the Tide used some clutch pitching and timely hitting to take the next two games, 6-3 and 7-6 to take the matchup two games to one. Bama pushed their record to 17-3 overall and 2-1 in the SEC, while the Vols fell to 18-3 and 1-2 in league play. Coach Rob Vaughn notched his first SEC win on Saturday, and his first SEC series win on Saturday. The always chippy Tennessee team was sent back to Knoxville with their tails tucked.

Game One- Lost 11-3

The Tide sent ace Ben Hess to the mound in Friday nights opener to face AJ Causey for Tennessee. Cause is an Alabama native and transferred to UT from Jacksonville State after last season. Hess got into trouble in the top of the first with some uncharacteristic wildness-some of his on doing and a lot on home plate umpire Christopher Griffith’s curious strike zone. A one out single was followed by a walk, then a strikeout for out two. Two more walks forced in the games first run, another strikeout ended the inning after 29 pitches from Hess.

The highlight of the night for the Tide came in the bottom of the first. After an opening strikeout Bama got back to back home runs from TJ McCants and Ian Petrutz to take a 2-1 lead. McCants home run was his 7th of the year and stretched his hitting streak to 18 games. Petrutz long ball was his second of the year.

The Volunteers took the lead back in the third inning. After a lead off ground out a full count walk to Billy Amick put a runner on for clean up man Kavares Tears. Tears popped out but Dylan Dreiling had a fortuitous ball called on an 0-2 count, and took advantage of it by slamming a two run home run for a 3-2 lead. Hess struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the fourth before he hit lead off man Christian Moore. With a pitch count that had already reached 83 pitches, Hess was replaced by Aidan Moza. Moza allowed a monster home run to Blake Burke, giving UT a 5-2 lead before retiring the side.

Bama loaded the bases in the 2nd, and had two men on the 5th, but other than were not threatening to cross the plate. Moza had a rough 5th inning and after two outs, three hits, a walk, and three runs, was replaced by Coulson Buchanan. Tears hit a long two run home run in the top of the 6th to make the lead 10-2. The sidewinder Causey continued to baffle the Tide batters through 6.2 innings before being replaced by Andrew Behnke. Pierce George took over the Tide in the 8th and allowed one run in two innings of work. Bama got their last run of the game in the bottom of the 9th when Will Hodo hit his 5th home run of the season. Three solo home runs plated all the runs for the Tide, while three home runs hit by Tennessee brought home six total runs.

Overall Alabama hit 7-34 in the game with three walks, one hit batters, 12 strikeouts, and eight men left on base. McCants was 2-4 with a home run, a hit by pitch and one driven in. Petrutz was also 2-4 with a home run and RBI. Hodo was the third player to go 2-4 with a home run and RBI. Tennessee finished 12-38 with seven walks, one HBP, 11 strikeouts, and eight left on base. The Vols had three doubles, three home runs, and a triple among their 12 safeties. Hess suffered the loss and is 3-1 on the year while Causey improved to 4-0 with the win.

Game Two- Won 6-3

Senior left-hander Greg Farone toed the rubber for the Tide against Tennessee stud ace Drew Beam. The Joe was teeming with MLB scouts to get a look at the hard throwing Beam. Although Beam did plenty to turn scouts heads, Farone definitely did as well.

In the top of the first Farone was greeted by a lead off single by Christian Moore and a double by number two hitter Blake Burke. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and no outs, the big lefty was just trying to limit the damage. And boy, did he. A strikeout for out one was followed by a walk to load the bases. Another strikeout and a fly out to right field kept the Vols off the board after their promising start to the inning.

The Tide took the lead in the bottom of the first. Gage Miller led off with a double and moved to third on a single by TJ McCants. The hit gave McCants a 19 game hitting streak. A ground ball fielders choice off the bat of Ian Petrutz gave the Tide the 1-0 lead, a lead they would never relinquish. Farone cruised through the 2nd and his teammates gave him two more runs in the bottom half. With two outs Justin LeBron singled and raced home on a triple by Bryce Eblin, a blow that just missed leaving the yard. A bad throw from Moore went into the Bama dugout and allowed Eblin to score as well.

Farone worked around a lead off double by Moore in the third with some heads up help by LeBron at shortstop. On a ground ball to LeBron, Moore tried to advanced but a perfect throw to Gage Miller at third base cut him down. The Tide had another two out rally in the bottom of the third. Evan Sleight drilled a line up the middle that ricocheted off of Beam’s foot for a single. After Beam was checked out by the trainer, he continued in the game. William Hamiter walked to put Sleight in scoring position. With an 0-2 count catcher Mac Guscette did a great job of reaching out and poking a single through the right side to score Sleight. LeBron then pulled a single through the six hole to plate two more runs and a 6-0 Tide lead.

The Vols finally got to Farone for a run in the top of the 4th. With one out Robin Villeneuve pulled a home run over the left field wall to cut the margin to 6-1. Farone shook off the blow and lasted a total of 5 1⁄3 innings, allowing five hits, with one walk, four strikeouts, and only the one run. Tyler Fay was called out of the pen and retired the next two batters. After the shot off of his foot and the shaky third, Beam was almost untouchable. Beam tossed an eight inning complete game and only allows one base runner from the 4th through the 8th inning.

Fay allowed a solo home run to Moore in the 7th with two outs. Fay remained in the game to start the 8th inning, but when hit the first batter was replaced in favor of Tide closer Alton Davis II. A bloop double and ground out brought home the Vol’s third run of the game. Davis notched a strikeout and then got a fly out to end the threat.

Davis remained in the game for the 9th and worked around an infield error and a single to retire the side with the tying run at the plate. With the 6-3 win Bama tied the series and sent it to the rubber game on Sunday.

The Tide hit 8-32 in the game with two walks, six strikeouts, and four men left on bases. LeBron finished 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Seven players in the line up had hits and all nine reached base at least once in the game. Farone improved to 3-0 with the win and while not technically a save, Davis’s work in a high leverage situation was tantamount to victory. Tennessee finished 8-37 in the game with only one walk, seven strikeouts, one hit batter, and nine men left on base. Moore was 4-5 with a double and home run. Beam recovered from is early trouble to throw a 101 pitch complete game, allowing eight hits with two walks, six strikeouts, with six runs, five of which were earned. However Beam did retire 16 of the last 17 batters he faced.

Game Three- Won 7-6

For game three coach Rob Vaughn called on junior right hander Hagan Banks. Banks is gradually working his way back from injury and was on a strict pitch count. Tennessee right hander AJ Russell was in the same situation, as he has missed the last couple of weeks of play.

After a scoreless top of the first for Banks the Tide got on the board in the bottom half. Gage Miller singled and advanced to second on a balk by Russell. Ian Petrutz lined a one out single to score Miller for the quick 1-0 lead. Banks had an uneventful second inning, but ran into trouble in the third. After walking the first man up and allowing a single to the next, Banks was replaced in favor of left-hander Kade Snell. Snell walked his first man to load the bases and was close to escaping the situation. An infield fly was out one, and a strikeout was out two. However two straight doubles brought four Vol runs home for the 4-1 lead.

The Tide answered in the bottom of the third. Miller walked to lead off and moved up on a single by TJ McCants. McCants hit gave him a 20 game hitting streak to open the season. Petrutz singled to bring home Miller and Evan Sleight lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to cut the lead to 4-3.

Braylon Myers (no relation), took over for the Tide in the fourth and kept the team in the game over three scoreless innings. In the bottom of the 4th Bama tied the game on a long home run blast by Will Hodo, his 6th of the year. Myers three innings consisted of only 27 pitches with one hit allowed, one walk, and two strikeouts. Tyler Fay took over in the 7th from Myers. After a strikeout the next two batters reached on a single and double to put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Freshman left hander Matthew Heiberger was called in from the pen. A ground ball out scored the go ahead run before another ground out ended the inning. Heigberger had a perfect 8th inning, setting up a dramatic finish.

In the bottom of the 8th Mac Guscette was hit by pitch to start the inning. With one out Justin LeBron singled. Guscette, the potential tying run, was replaced by pinch runner Kameron Guangorena . Bryce Eblin hit a drive to left field that Dylan Dreiling somehow corralled for out two. LeBron had to race back to first to avoid being doubled up, while Guangorena returned to second base. Miller strode to the plate and on a 1-0 pitched absolutely destroyed the ball on a 415 foot drive into the law school parking lot for a three run home run. The blast was Miller’s 9th of the season. McCants walked and Petrutz was hit by a pitch, but both were stranded to end the inning.

The Tide almost self destructed in the top of the ninth. Cal Stark led off for UT and received second life when Guangorena and Hodo collided on a foul pop up. Stark then singled. A fly ball to center field was the first out. Blake Burke reached when Miller’s throw on a ground ball was low and in the dirt to first base. A single loaded the bases, and brought Aidan Moza out of the Tide bullpen. Moza struck out Kavares Tears for the second out before walking Dreiling to force in a run. With the score at 7-6, and the bases still loaded, Moza struck out Robin Villeneuve with three straight nasty breaking balls to nail down the win and the series for the Tide.

Alabama hit 11-34 in the game with two walks, three hit batters, four strikeouts, and left nine men on base. The Tide had two home runs. one each fly, and committed two errors. Miller finished 2-4 with a walk, three runs scored, one walk, there RBI and the game winning home run. Petrutz was 2-4 with two runs driven in, Hodo was 2-4 with a run and RBI. and McCants also had a two hit game in four at bats. Heiberger improved to 2-0 with then win and Moza earned his first save of the season.

Tennessee hit 10-38 in the game with four walks, nine strikeouts, nine men left on base, with three doubles while committing one error. Nate Snead threw 5.1 innings in relief and was the loser, falling to 4-1 on the season.

Overall the Tide hit .265 on 26 hits in 98 at bats, adding seven walk, four hit batters, while striking out 22 times and leaving 21 men on base. Bama hit four home runs in the series with two doubles and a triple. Alabama pitchers held the powerful Tennessee lineup to a .265 average also with 30 hits in 113 at bats. The Vols walked 12 times, had one hits batters, struck out 27 times, and left 36 men on base.

Last word:

What a great series win to start the Rob Vaughn era in Tuscaloosa. There is absolutely no quit in this Tide team. There are warts but the drive and competitiveness of this group is second to none. Tennessee has been one of the big bad wolves of the conference over the last several years, and Bama didn't back down. Despite being kicked in the teeth in the open the team never backed down. Hess is one of the best pitchers in the country and when he gets on track along with what Farone has brought to the table the Tide will have an opportunity in each series. The third starting slot is a work in progress and Vaughn and pitching coach Jason Jackson may decide to stick with Banks in that role, or use one of their other talented arms.

Miller has been an absolute star out of Bishop CC, and his hitting a robust .443 with nine home runs and 26 RBI. Eblin is having the best year of his career in his senior season and is hitting .377 with four home runs. McCants came over from Ole Miss and is hitting .369 with seven home runs, 24 RBI, eight doubles, and six stolen bases. The lineup has been mostly settled other than the designated hitter spot, which has rotated several players thus far. The Tide is moving close to being ranked as a top 10 team.

A trip to Montgomery to play the Alabama State Hornets on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The game will be held at the Hornets home field, and not Riverwalk Stadium as some have thought. The weekend will take the Tide to Athens to take on the Georgia Bulldogs. The three game series has games set at 5 p.m. CT on Friday, 11 a.m. CT on Saturday, and noon CT on Sunday. Friday and Sunday’s games will be on SEC Network Plus, while Saturday’s contest will be on the SEC Network.

A cross country trip awaits the Tide.

After bowing out on Friday in the SEC Tournament, it was fair to wonder how far Alabama would fall in the NCAA Tournament seeding process. As it turns out, they held on to the 4-seed line by a thread and are headed to the West region, where they will face 13-seed Charleston. The Cougars won both the regular season and Colonial Athletic Association titles, finishing 27-7. They played only one Quad 1 game all season and lost it, by 16 at Florida Atlantic.

There are no gimmes in the NCAA Tournament, but Alabama should be expected to handle Charleston. Should they prevail, they will face the winner of Saint Mary’s and Grand Canyon University. Both of those schools will obviously hold a a geographic advantage, and the first round game between them should be interesting for the contrasting styles. Grand Canyon is a faster paced bunch, ranking 44th in the nation in scoring at 79.8 a game, while the Gaels allow a 6th-best 58 points per game.

It’s fair to say that this draw has Alabama playing against themselves. They will be favored no matter who they play, and there really is no excuse for not making the second weekend. Should that happen, top seed North Carolina likely awaits.

Let’s hope we get the opportunity to break that matchup down, shall we?

Georgia wins the first two but Bama salvages the weekend in the finale.

It was deja vu all over again. Just like last weekend against Florida, the Crimson Tide had a close loss in Game 1, got run-ruled in Game 2, and then won the finale against UGA.

Alabama starter Kayla Beaver (L, 8-2) was doing okay for the first three innings - though she did give up singles in each of those innings. The big blow came in the 4th frame when a single and walk were followed by a a three run shot by Georgia’s number seven hitter Ellie Armistead. Beaver finished the 4th inning and got the first out of the 5th. But instead of sticking with his ace, Patrick Murphy turned to Alea Johnson who had some trouble finding the strike zone. A walk and a single would plate a fourth run for UGA. Alea would walk two more before Jocelyn Briski relieved her and got the last two outs of the frame and finish the game.

Solo homers by Kenleigh Cahalan and Kali Heivilin accounted for the two Bama runs. Two singles totaled up the four hits for Alabama on the day.

THE GOOD: The Tide converted a line drive into double play in the 1st and had a strike-em-out-throw-em-out DP in the 2nd.

THE BAD: Bama left eight runners on base, seven of whom were left in scoring position.

After Alabama meekly went down in order in the top of 1st, starter Jaala Torrence (L, 7-3) gave up a single to the first UGA batter and a homer to the third batter. In the 2nd inning, Torrence walked the first two batters but then got the next two batters out. At this point, Murphy brought in Briski who proceeded to walk the next batter and then serve up a grand slam. A 6-0 deficit for the Tide might as well have been 66-0.

A double by Cahalan in the 4th made it 6-1.

Alea started the 5th and again struggled with control by walking a pair. A single and a sac fly would push two more Dwags across home plate.

An Abby Duchscherer single made it 8-3 in the 5th but the Tide could not advance any further on the opposition. And then, more Bulldogs runs ended this game early.

Cahalan hit a sac-fly to score one and Dowling doubled in to make it 3-0. After a strikeout, Emma Broadfoot singled in two to put Bama up 5-1. And then the Tide batters put their bats on ice.

The Bulldogs pecked away at the lead, scoring single runs in the 5th, 6th and 7th. UGA loaded the bases in the bottom of the 7th but Beaver struck out Justin Fields’s kid sister swinging to end the game.

Bama was better in clutch hitting Sunday but often as it goes, the runs come in one inning.

Murphy built this team on small ball and his beloved “Greenlight Girls”. But where is the running? Coming into this weekend, Alabama was 141st in Division-I in stolen bases per game. Their 81.25% success rate ranks 150th. The Crimson Tide had one stolen base this weekend in one attempt.

Speaking of running, Kristen White was called out for leaving first base too early in Game 3.

The Gut killed a rally in Game 3. Bama had pushed across five runs in the 4th inning and looked to inflict more damage with a runner on second base with two outs. That is when El Gutto Gigante decided to pinch hit the Strikeout Queen KJ Haney for Kristen White. At least she grounded out to end the inning. Haney is hitless this season.

Kali Heivilin is surprisingly second on the team in RBI with 17. She trails Duke’s 26 and leads Dowling (12) and Cahalan (11).

Lauren Esman had a walk and a K in three plate appearances. It is unclear if her injury is still affecting her or perhaps it’s her confidence. It’s a shame because she looked so promising at the beginning of the season. Hopefully, Murphy will give her some more opportunities in the upcoming midweek games.

Marlie Giles had a rough weekend going 0 for 8 with 3 strikeouts.

Lauren Johnson wasted away on the bench instead of gaining valuable experience. The freshman received only two plate appearances over the weekend. She better get her backside to church!

Former Alabama player Dallis Goodnight (.348 BA) was 5 for 7 with 3 runs scored, 2 RBI, and a stolen base. It sure would be nice to still have her bat in the Tide lineup.

Once again, you cannot blame Bama fans for the losses. The Crimson and White fans were out in force and vocal.

Despite the terrible finish to the season, Alabama will be looking at its fourth straight higher-seed in the Big Dance

With a one-and-done appearance in Nashville for the SEC Tournament wrapping up a stretch of four losses in just six games, it’s easy to be down on Nate Oats’ 2024 version of Tide Hoops. Alabama certainly hasn’t looked very good to end the season, which is a far cry from where the Tide was at this point last year - when they were named the #1 overall seed for the NCAA Tournament on Selection Sunday.

Still, Alabama’s name will be called today, and the guys will likely be seeded quite highly. The Crimson Tide is still - at worst - a five-seed in this year’s field, with the consensus among bracketologists agreeing the most likely scenario being a four-seed. Regardless, it will be Alabama’s fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance - a feat that hasn’t been accomplished since Mark Gottfried led the Tide to five straight invitations to the Big Dance from 2002-2006. If you want to think big, you can get +4000 on Alabama to win it all at DraftKings SportsBook, by scrolling to the “Team Futures” tab.

I think it’s obvious at this point how important Alabama’s draw will be for the Tide’s prospects of making noise in this year’s tournament. Florida was a nightmare match-up for this year’s squad - a team with a ton of size on the interior who can play at Alabama’s tempo and abuse the Tide’s weak defense by taking advantage of their propensity to foul constantly off the dribble. Alabama needs a path that goes through smaller teams that can’t run with the Tide or successfully chase its shooters off of the three-point line. I’d feel a lot better about a Vermont -> Wisconsin draw than a Samford -> BYU one, for example.

We’ll find out shortly. The Selection Show will be televised on CBS starting at 5:00 PM CDT.

Grant Nelson scored 11 points on Friday night for the Tide | Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images

The Crimson Tide lost for the 4th time in their last six games on Friday night. The 6th seeded Florida Gators ran the Tide 102-88

The Alabama Crimson Tide had a short stay in Nashville, losing 102-88 to the Florida Gators on Friday night. Bama, the third seed, followed top seeded Tennessee and second seeded Kentucky out of the tournament. Auburn at four is joined by the 6th, 7th and 9th seeded teams in the semifinals. The Vols were upset by Mississippi State while the Wildcats fell to Texas A&M. Auburn will play MSU and Florida draws the Aggies from TAM.

Coach Nate Oats sent out Mark Sears, Aaron Estrada, Latrell Wrightsell, Jr, Nick Pringle, and Grant Nelson to start the game. The first two minutes of the game were the highlight for the Tide. Two inside hoops by Nelson, a layup by Wrightsell, and a dunk by Pringle sprung Bama out to an 8-0 lead with 18:06 left in the half. Alabama held a lead of 11-5 for two minutes before as scoring was hard to come by for both teams. The flow improved and when Sears made a layup with 5:40 left the Tide led 31-27. From that point forward Bama couldn't throw the ball in the ocean, missing layups, three point attempts, and even free throws. The Gators went on a 21-2 run to take control of the game and a lead of 48-33 at the break.

The Tide shot 15-36 for 42% in the first half including just 3-12 from deep for 25%. Bama was also 0-4 from the free throw line. Alabama had 18 rebounds, two blocks, two steals, nine assists, and six turnovers at the break. Estrada and Nelson had eight points each to lead the squad. Florida shot an even 50% at 17-34 including 4-10 from behind the arc. After struggling at the free throw line on Thursday night the Gator’s knocked down 10-12 freebies, had 22 rebounds, three blocks, four steals, five assists, and only four turnovers. Walker Clayton, Jr, with 12 and Zyon Pullin with 11 were the leading scorers.

Bama unitized the same starters in the second half and things never really improved, with the lead getting stretched out to as many as 25 points. With 10:49 left the score had reached 73-49. From the point forward the Tide outscored the Gators 39-29, piling on some late points to close the margin to the final of 102-88. Sears scored 18 second half points, many late when the outcome was already determined. The effort of Bama did seem to pick up over the last 10 minutes when Oats lit into the players to try to get some modicum of effort. Late in the game Clayton of Florida got his feet tangled up and fell with Nelson about three feet away from him. Somehow Nelson was called for a foul, which clearly was not. The replay showed the two never came close to each other, continuing the trend of Nelson being called for a foul if he breathes.

In the second half the Tide shot 18-35 for 51%, 3-13 from deep, and 16-19 at the line. Overall Bama finished at 43% on 33-71 from the field, including only 24% on 6-25 from deep, and made 16-23 free throws for 70%. Alabama finished with 35 rebounds, 15 assists, four blocks, three steals, and only eight turnovers. Despite 0-4 shooting from three point range, Sears scored 22 points with four rebounds and four assists. Estrada shot 7-12 and tallied 17 points with six assists and three rebounds. Pringle has started stacking up double-doubles, and got another with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Nelson shot 5-10 and finished with 11 points.

Florida shot 15-29 for 52%, 3-10 from deep and 21-24 at the stripe in the second half. Overall the Gators were 32-63 for 41%, 7-20 from three, and 31-36 at the line after a miserable free throw performance on Thursday. Clayton scored 23, with 11-11 at the free throw line, and Pullin had 19 with 10-11 at the stripe.

The Tide has been in a free fall over the last several games, losing four of their last six games now. Bama allowed over 100 points in three of the defeats. Too often opponents are driving the lane and scoring with impunity. Bama has put themselves behind the eight ball early and often. Many of the points the Tide has scored in recent games have basically been in garbage time, and has made the scores look “better” than the actually were.

There is at least one more game to be played and the Tide will know on Sunday who and where they will play in the NCAA Tournament. Bama was pushing for a three seed, and were probably on the four line entering the tournament. That number could slide down to the five or six line when the selections are announced. Get a favorable draw and Bama could make a little noise. Get a bad matchup and the season could come to a quick end.

Much has been said about all the players but Estrada are eligible to come back next year. If that happens will the Tide have the same type team they have now? A fun team when they are running, gunning, and making shots- mostly against overmatched teams, or the team that can't stop good teams (and some bad teams) from scoring? With a 21-11 recored, a tie for second in the SEC, and a third seed in the SEC Tournament the season has been a success- and the team has really over achieved. Some changes need to be made to the roster, and there will be. The signing class is one of the best in the country and some of the returners should make big steps forward. Sears, Wrightsell, Nelson, and Pringle are all seniors that have a Covid year available, but have they all reached their pinnacle, or is improvement to be made by each? Griffen, Stevenson, and Walters should all take a big step forward if they all stay onboard. With the portal readily available many of the players may choose to move on, and some may come aboard. Such is life in the NCAA now.

The deal reportedly puts Coach Oats in the Top 5 among college coaching salaries.

Today, Alabama fans received troubling news (or at least news that gave many of us pause), as the Michigan Wolverines finally pulled the plug on the miserable tenure of Juwan Howard.

Michigan acted quickly, indicating they wanted to get a jump on the annual March coach-poach. But they are by no means the only desirable destination also looking. Less than 24 hours earlier, Louisville kicked the equally-terrible Kenny Payne to the curb.

Coach Nate Oats name has been connected with Louisville in the past, and you have to think that Michigan would certainly come sniffing around, as one of the few schools with the resources to afford his already substantial contract buyout.

Perhaps out of paranoia and unsteadiness in our new-found role as basketball national power, a lot of brows started beading sweat with the carousel firing up; as though fans cannot believe that his commitment to the Capstone runs deep. Conversely, many nursed well-founded fears as to whether the administration’s commitment to Oats would be reciprocated. This is all very new to us, after all, and previous Alabama administrations have given no indication that basketball is a priority on campus.

Well, put those fears and uncertainties aside: Coach Oats is staying, having made a long-term commitment to the program that he has built. And equally important, Alabama has finally made the decision to get serious about hoops.

From Y!:

“Alabama basketball head coach Nate Oats has signed a long-term contract extension that will make him one of the five highest-paid coaches in the country, according to a report from ESPN on Friday.”

According to reporting, the deal will vault Oats into the Top 5 in coaching salary. At just 49, he’s already well-compensated and in the prime of his career — this firmly establishes that he is also around for the long haul.

We have long asked “why not us?” in relation to this program.

Alabama is well-positioned to be as dominant a player as almost anyone in the country. The resources are there. The talent is there. The recruiting pipelines are in place. The fan support is there. The students are are raucous as anyone in the country. The SEC is one of the nation’s premiere basketball leagues now.

All that was missing was a commitment between a willing suitor and an administration, and it seems as though both are now finally in accord.

Does this mean that Nate Oats will spend 30 years at Alabama and leave as our own Coach K or Dean Smith? No, of course not. But it does mean that there are now only a handful of programs in the country — the bluest of the Blue Bloods — that could or would contemplate such a steep buyout. Honestly, if Kansas or Duke come calling in five years, you thank him for his contributions and wish him well in the future. But this also means that lateral jobs, ones considered “basketball schools” need to look elsewhere.
