Baseball Coach Wells to Stay at Alabama

Wells will lead the Crimson Tide in their SEC title defense

Alabama baseball coach Jim Wells will stay at Alabama. He was believed to the leading candidate to fill the coaching vacancy at LSU.

Wells had this say:

"I did want to meet with Coach [Mal] Moore and Dr. Witt to discuss the future of our program in all areas, including academics, scholarships and facilities. We met last week, and I felt Dr. Witt and Coach Moore were very helpful, and I look forward to working with them in the future."

"[LSU athletic director] Coach [Skip] Bertman had asked to meet with me personally. I felt I should do that, because he is an old friend, and Coach Moore approved that. We met in Omaha and we talked. I don't want to share the particulars of our conversation, because he is an old friend. But I wish them well in their search."

That's great news for Alabama baseball. I have to say that I'm a bit surprised given Wells' incredibly vague statements throughout the series of meetings with Alabama and LSU officials. That's usually a sure sign of being gone.

The Crimson Tide were SEC co-champions with Kentucky in 2006 and lost in the Super Regionals to North Carolina.
