Great Moments in Alabama History: 01/01/79: Sugar Bowl

On January 1, 1979, #2 Alabama faced #1 Penn State in a game to determine the national champion. It was only the fifth time in the history of college football that the #1 & #2 teams met in a bowl game.

It was a low scoring, defensive grudge match that Alabama won 14-7. The game is most famous for "The Goal Line Stand" in which the Alabama defense kept Penn State out of the endzone on a fourth and goal from the 1/2 yard line. Keep an eye out for the hilarious straight ahead kickers.

Bruce Bolton's 30 yard TD reception put Bama up 7-0.
