disconsolate dis-KON-suh-lut, adjective:
- Being beyond consolation; deeply dejected and dispirited; hopelessly sad; filled with grief; as, "a bereaved and disconsolate parent."
- Inspiring dejection; saddening; cheerless; as, "the disconsolate darkness of the winter nights."

Though no one likes to lose, if you finish second on American Idol there's no need to be disconsolate; You'll still wind up with a record deal and, if you're lucky (by which I mean hott), a place of honor on some loser's football blog.
