The Five Most Pleasant Surprises of 2007: #2 - Rushing Defense

With all the excitement surrounding the Applewhite departure, the search for a new OC, and "Girl Fight '08!", I let the Pleasant Surprises countdown slide last week. So without further ado...

Though I was disappointed in the passing defense this season, I was pleasantly surprised by the front seven, a unit that many thought would be the weak link in the defense and a huge liability for the Tide. Turns out, though, they were the probably the most productive part of the defense this season, finishing fourth in the conference (and 28th in the nation) in rushing defense, allowing 3.4 ypc and 124.2 ypg, and also produced an All-SEC DE in Wallace Gilbery selections and a Freshman All-American with Rolando McClain.
