Georgia Thoughts

New, 8 comments

Some thoughts frim watching a late-night rerun of the Alabama v. UGA game...

  • Starting with 2nd and 20 for Georgia and 4:32 left in the third...
  • Three-wide, backs in the I, against a seven man front (Castille creeps in from the nickel spot)... four down rush and the three others drop into zone... Knight is RDE and expects pass, rushes the outside, while Deaderick crashes the center, leaves a big hole in the B-gap... Moreno shoots through, jukes Lionell Mitchell out of his shoes 8 yards downfield and picks up another 10.
  • 3rd and 1... we clog the middle with linemen and crash the A-gaps... UGA calls a fullback dive that never has a chance... loses yardage... punting time.
  • UGA gets lucky... punter drops a high snap that we could have easily blocked had we had the rush on, but since we had dropped back for the return, he gets the kick away relatively easy and Arenas calls the fair catch.
  • 1st and 10... perfectly executed screen has Grant out in space with Caldwell and Andre leading the way... bad throw by Wilson forces Grant to bat the ball up in the air to himself to make the catch, and he gains about eight. A decent screen pass and it goes for much more. Pass was too hard and too high
  • 2nd and a short 3... left side of the line gets a good push, clears space for Grant, and he lowers the shoulder and cuts back to the right to get the first down.
  • 1st and 10... run left by Grant, UGA defensive line all slants that way, and they beat us at the line of scrimmage. Nice job by Grant of quickly hitting the hole to get a solid four-yard gain.
  • 2nd and 6... we run the screen to Grant again, this time to the left (the near side of the field), but the UGA defensive line never really buys it, nor do the linebackers, and it loses yardage. After the success of the screen play two downs earlier, UGA expected it, and it wasn't a particularly good play call.
  • 3rd and 8... UGA brings seven on the blitz... six immediately and a delayed safety blitz to make seven. We've got man coverage on everyone, but Mike Johnson completely whiffs on his block of the UGA DE. Wilson has to hurry his throw off-balance, but makes a decent throw to an open Keith Brown who drops the ball. A bit behind him on the crossing route, but should have been caught. Punting time.
  • Average punt... bad coverage... would have gotten the ball at midfield but a block in the back negates a 17 yard return.
  • 1st and 10... stretch play to Moreno to the right... great play by Lorenzo Washington to drive the center back into the backfield and then move laterally to negate the gain to about two.
  • Playfake... Georgia had the tight end wide open on the backside as Stafford rolled back around, but Prince Hall came free on a blitz and forced an errant throw. Incomplete.
  • 3rd and 7...  Out of the shotgun, UGA gets a one-on-one match-up with Moreno and Prince Hall... Hall can't quite keep up, and Moreno does a great job of stretching for the first down.
  • 1st and 10... dive to Moreno can't get anything going, and that will end the third quarter.
  • Up the middle again to Moreno... good for only a couple of yards... third and long.
  • 3rd and 8... shotgun formation... Simeon comes in untouched on a late blitz from the nickel position, but Stafford gets the quick throw off... completed curl route to Mikey Henderson, covered pretty well by Kareem Jackson. Good job by the defense... forced a quick throw and held UGA short of the first down.
  • Coutu hits the 48-yard field goal... a bit of a knuckleball, but plenty long enough and it breaks in late. UGA leads 20-10...
  • ESPN U is gay so they just fast-forwarded through a few plays... 2nd and 14 'Bama from our own 30...
  • 2nd and 14... in the shotgun, Wilson gets very good protection, and steps up and makes a beautiful throw over the deep middle to Keith Brown. Just enough touch and air to get it over the MLB who dropped into the deep middle in zone, but firm and accurate enough to hit Brown in stride, splitting the two UGA safeties. No two ways about it... great protection up front, great throw from Wilson. Great catch by Brown, too, he went hard for the ball knowing he would get hammered. First down at the 50.
  • 1st and 10... shotgun formation... handoff to Coffee goes to the left side. Mike McCoy has a great crackback block on the OLB and that lets Coffee get the edge for a good seven yard gain.
  • 2nd and 3... singleback with three wide... we fake the dive to Coffee, throwing deep.. bad play by Wilson. He has McCoy streaking to the deep left, and has all day to throw... McCoy has his man beat, but Wilson waits too long to throw the football, and when he does it's underthrown. The UGA cornerback races to the underthrow just in time to bat it out of the awaiting arms of McCoy at the goal line. Bad play by Wilson... cost us a touchdown.
  • 3rd and 3... we spread the field with three wide receivers, UGA plays man on the outside  with safety help and has only six men in the box. Coffee hits the B-gap hard, but as usual trips over one of the linemen... but falls forward for the first down. A great block by Caldwell from center gives him the room he needs. First down.
  • 1st and 10... run the left side, nothing doing. The UGA nose tackle beat Caldwell at the line of scrimmage to get into the backfield, and the rest of the UGA defense held strong... short gain. Fortunately, off-sides on UGA, 1st and 5.
  • 1st and 5... singleback formation, two tight ends, we run left with Coffee again. The right side of the offensive line falters a bit, but great blocks on the left by Andre Smith, Nick Walker, and Mike McCoy allow Coffee to get within inches of the first down. Good job of attacking the hole quickly by Coffee.
  • 2nd and inches... singleback with two tight ends again... we run left again with Coffee, and UGA blows it up. Their defensive line knew it was coming, crashed to the left side, and Keith Brown completely whiffed on the block of the blitzing cornerback (and that's why Mike McCoy played so much last year). Whiffs notwithstanding, not a good play call, UGA obviously knew what was coming... as did the ESPN announcers.
  • 3rd and 3... We go jumbo package... six offensive linemen on the field, plus Nick Walker in at tight end, and the backs are lined up in the I-formation. We were looking to run off right tackle, but Wilson tripped over the center. Wilson was a bit slow getting away from center, and when Caldwell took a step back he stepped directly on Wilson's right foot... 4th down
  • 4th and 7... shotgun, nobody back to protect... UGA blitzer comes untouched and Wilson throws a hot route to Hall. It was short of the first down marker (quick little out route), but D.J. Hall was clearly interfered with by the UGA corner... pass interference, first down.
  • 1st and 10... singleback with two tight ends... Hall runs a stop-and-go route on the left side of the field, and clearly beats the corner. If Wilson hits him in stride Hall walks into the endzone, but the ball is underthrown and on the wrong side of him. Hall has to turn 180 degrees, go back to the ball, and goes out of bounds at about the 8. It was initially ruled incomplete on the field, but a challenge overturned it. (I swear, even in fast-forward, these damn reviews take all night even for obvious plays.)
  • 1st and goal from the seven... Walker is in the backfield as a fullback, run to the left with Coffee, but nothing is doing. We gain maybe a yard.
  • 2nd and goal... four wide receivers. We tried to spread 'em out and hit Coffee quickly up the middle in the A-gap, but it didn't work. Short gain, third and goal.
  • 3rd and goal... looking for a post in the back of the endzone with McCoy, but not even close... just way too congested in the area.
  • Field goal is good by Tiffin... 20-13 with under 7 minutes to go.
  • High short kick to one of the up-men, and he gets a good return. UGA starts from near the 40. 6:24 left in the game.
  • 1st and 10... I-formation, twin receivers right... zone run to Brown and he and he gets big yardage into Alabama territory. We got beat up front which allowed Brown to reach the second level, and from there the typically terrible shoulder tackle attempt from Marcus Carter let him go another seven or eight yards.
  • 1st and 10... toss left to Brown has a lot of potential, but Rolando McClain makes a great play to stop Brown for only a couple, and forces him out of bounds to stop the clock as well.
  • 2nd and 8... 'Bama shifts into an eight-man front late, UGA runs right, and Gilberry takes advantage of some confusion on the left side of the UGA offensive line to crash the play in the backfield for a loss.
  • 3rd and 11... play-fake, Simeon Castille in man coverage down the right side, and the UGA receiver has him beat deep on a go route. Thankfully Stafford underthrows the ball badly, the UGA receiver has to slow down, and he and Castille get their feet tangled and trip up and fall... incomplete pass. A good throw and that is probably a touchdown. Punting time.
  • 1st and 10 'Bama with under five minutes to go, trailing 20-13... three wide receiver set with a singleback, Hall isolated on the near side of the field... playfake and we're throwing deep to Hall... incomplete. Hall had beaten the corner and had space from the safety... the pass protection was good and Wilson had time to throw, but he throws a bad ball that curves back near the sideline in flight, and ultimately the ball sails out of bounds. Had him open downfield, and flat out missed him.
  • 2nd and 10... Keith Brown isolated in man coverage on the far side, and it's a go route all the way; Wilson gets good protection. Brown has his man beat down the sideline, but the ball is underthrown and veering away from Brown toward the middle of the field. Brown sees it, makes a great adjustment, and hauls in a fine catch at the UGA 45.
  • 1st and 10... three wide receivers, singleback, we run it to the left with Coffee. Solid gain of about four yards on first down.
  • 2nd and 6... delayed hand-off to Upchurch out of the shotgun, and he blasts through the line for the first down. Timeout UGA.
  • 1st and 10... another handoff, this time to Grant, will yield more good yardage.
  • 2nd and 4... Another handoff, this time to Coffee, he lowers the shoulder hard and fights near the first down marker.
  • 3rd and 1... We go jumbo again, run to the left, and a great job by Coffee to quickly hit the hole, keep his legs churning, and pound out the first down.
  • 1st and 10... four wide receivers, and the tight end releases on a pass pattern... we hit a nice crossing route to McCoy for good yardage, and they call D.J. Hall for being an ineligible receiver downfield because he was covered up.
  • 1st and 15... four wide receivers... quick little hitch to Keith Brown... taking what we can get because the UGA corner was giving him a huge cushion. He fights upfield for eight yards.
  • 2nd and 7... shotgun, hand-off to Upchurch fools no one, but he makes a great run and break two tackles to give us a first and goal...
  • 1st and goal from the 7... Wilson is under center, drops back to pass, no one is open, and he will take off. A great run by Wilson will get 'Bama into the endzone to tie it up 20-20.
  • 1st and 10 UGA from their own 34... shotgun, five receivers, hits Brown out of the backfield for eight yards.
  • 2nd and 2... 40 seconds to go... clock running... bubble screen to Bailey and he gets good yardage under the loose coverage. Into Alabama territory, UGA is at the 49 with a first down.
  • 1st and 10... shotgun, bad snap, Simeon comes on a nickel blitz. Sharrief was covering the tight end on the backside, Stafford fires in that direction, but the tight end drops it. Good coverage by Sharrief, but a catchable ball and a great throw.
  • 2nd and 10... Zeke Knight is lined up at DE and completely throws the UGA offensive line off with a stunt... he comes in untouched and Stafford has to effectively throw it away. UGA kicker about to wet himself on the sideline.
  • 3rd and 10... Out of the shotgun, it's a run left to Brown, and it gets good yardage, but short of the first down. 12 seconds left, UGA will go for it on fourth down to set up a field goal try.
  • 4th and 2... Stafford in the shotgun, three wide... we blitz and they pick it up, Stafford fakes a throw, and then hits the tight end over the middle for a big gain to the 29...
  • Coutu goes for the game-winner, and it does exactly like the last kick did. It slowly curves left, and slightly misses wide left. The kick has the exact same trajectory as the previous kick that barely came inside the upright at the last second on the other side. I guess he did wet himself after all.
  • UGA wins the toss in overtime, and we get the ball first.
  • 1st and 10 from the 25...singleback formation with two tight ends, twin wide receivers to the right. Hand-off to the left side to Coffee gets absolutely nothing.
  • 2nd and 9... shotgun formation, four wide receivers. Upchurch is split out wide at the bottom of the field as a receiver, and UGA screws up the coverage and temporarily has no one on that side of the field. If Wilson calls for the snap, he can throw a quick pass to Upchurch (ala Croyle to Hall against Arkansas in 2005) and it will get big yardage, if not a touchdown. Unfortunately Wilson never looks in that direction, and UGA gets a chance to recover... He throws a backside fade to Caddell, and it's thrown well out of bounds.
  • 3rd and 9... Shotgun formation, four wide receivers... Wilson stares down Hall who is running a hitch at the first down marker... almost intercepted. Thankfully it falls to the ground unharmed.
  • 4th and 9... Leigh Tiffin splits the uprights, and we temporarily take a 23-20 lead over UGA.
  • 1st and 10 for UGA... I-formation, tight end goes in motion, and UGA runs the play-fake. Mikey Henderson is isolated in man coverage against Lionell Mitchell, he beats him off the ball, and Stafford delivers a great throw to win it. UGA ran this exact same play, including the Henderson on Mitchell matchup, early in the third quarter, and it had the exact same result. Mitchell was beaten off the line, Henderson was open, but thankfully then the ball was slightly underthrown and Henderson dropped it. In this case, though, there is no such luck... Henderson makes the grab and UGA wins it.
