Phillip Sims Commits To Alabama

We have some huge recruiting news breaking late tonight: We have found our quarterback for the 2010 recruiting class, and his name is Phillip Sims.

Sims is a 6'2, 210 pound quarterback prospect out of Cheseapeake, Virginia, and he is widely considered one of the top players in the country. Both and Rivals currently have him as a four-star prospect, with Rivals having him as the #52 overall player in the country, and having him as the #29 overall player in the country. At the very least he will end up a highly-touted four-star, and may even get a fifth star.

Sims has long been interested in Alabama, and arrived in Tuscaloosa on an unofficial visit yesterday. He will be leaving tomorrow morning, but apparently around 7:00 tonight he got on touch with our coaching staff and told them that he wanted to commit. Sims had offers from just about every major program in the country, and chose the Tide over the likes of Georgia, Florida State, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, West Virginia, and others.

Three months ago, Sims was named the first team quarterback at the U.S. Army Junior Combine in San Antonio. Thus far in high school, he has set the world on fire, throwing for over 7,000 yards and 86 touchdowns. Last year as a junior, he throw for over 3,100 yards, with 38 touchdown passes coming against only four interceptions, all the while leading his team to a state championship.

Sims went on record saying that the coaching staff has told him he will be their only quarterback recruit in this class, and also said the following:

I talked to Coach McElwain about the offense. We broke down the offense and I like it. It's a lot of the same things we do at my high school, so I already have a feel for what Alabama does. I feel comfortable with the offense and how I fit into it.

I told Coach Saban, Coach McElwain, Coach Sal and all of the coaches that I'm going to start working on every kid out there that we want. I'm going to try to help recruit some of the other top players to Alabama. I'm going to be the head recruiter. I'm going to start right away.
