With Dana Holgorsen headed to Morgantown to take over hated rival West Virginia in 2012, Pitt is apparently turning their attention to Miami (Ohio) head coach Mike Haywood. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:
Officially the job has not been offered to [Mike] Haywood - officially - but he is in Pittsburgh and from everything I can tell based on who I have talked to this morning, he is the first candidate that has actually been brought to campus and it is likely he is now fully in the crosshairs of this thing.
Obviously things can change moving forward, and the Pitt coaching search has been nothing if not unpredictable, but for now it certainly seems like Haywood is their man, and it's hard to see him turning them down.
Two specific points here relating to 'Bama. One, it seems like you can cross Sal Sunseri for the Pitt head coaching job, as several candidates have been pursued by Pitt now and he has not been one of him. It's possible he could go somewhere else as a defensive coordinator, but I don't think you have to worry about the Pitt head coaching job getting him away from Tuscaloosa. Second, Haywood is yet another Saban protege, having spent three years with him at LSU, and if he gets the job then the Nick Saban coaching tree grows ever more.
Update: As expected, according to Joe Schad, Pitt has hired Mike Haywood as their next coach.
