'Bama Releases Preliminary 2011 Roster

New, 38 comments

SEC Media Days usually brings a preview of the roster for the upcoming season, and the same holds true once again this year as 'Bama has now posted the 2011 roster on RollTide.com. In other words, it's sneak peek time for the incoming freshmen and any offseason roster attrition.

First and foremost, regarding attrition, pay close attention that neither Kendall Kelly, Kerry Murphy, or Wes Neighbors are listed on the roster. All three missed spring practice and were expected then to end up on medical scholarship, and the latest news indicates there has been no change in their status. In other words, it looks like all three will go on medical scholarship as expected, and at this point we're just waiting on an official announcement in the next couple of weeks.

Also missing are Keiwone Malone, Darrington Sentimore, and Brandon Moore. We haven't heard any definite plans out of them in recent weeks, but again at this point its not a realistic to expect that any of them will be with the program moving forward. We'd like to see that change, of course, but at the least their return does not seem imminent.

Also, for those of you who have been anxiously awaiting, Chris Walsh has compiled all of the jersey numbers for the incoming recruiting class as part of a lengthy piece. Those numbers are as follows:

21 Brent Calloway RB Fr. HS 6-1 217 Russellville, AL (Russellville)
8 Duron Carter WR Jr. JC 6-4/210 Coffeyville, KS (Coffeyville CC)
6 Hasean Clinton-Dix DB Fr. HS 6-1/203 Orlando, FL (Dr. Phillips)
47 Xzavier Dickson LB/DL Fr. HS 6-3/240 Griffin, GA (Griffin)
85 Malcolm Faciane TE Fr. HS 6-5/259 Picayune, MS (Picayune)
44 LaMichael Fanning DL Fr. HS 6-7/275 Hamilton, GA (Harris County)
22 Christion Jones DB Fr. HS 5-11/175 Adamsville, AL (Minor)
70 Ryan Kelly OL Fr. HS 6-5/281 West Chester OH (Lakota West)
71 Cyrus Kouandijo OL Fr. HS 6-6/322 Hyattsville, MD (DeMatha)
68 Isaac Luatua OL Fr. HS 6-2/299 La Mirada, CA (La Mirada)
8 Jeoffrey Pagan DE Fr. HS 6-4/272 Asheville, NC (Asheville)
57 D.J. Pettway DE Fr. HS 6-2/272 Pensacola, FL (Catholic)
80 Marvin Shinn WR Fr. HS 6-3/193 Prichard, AL (Vigor)
16 Bradley Sylve WR Fr. 5-11/170 Port Sulpher, La. (South Palquemines)
26 Jabriel Washington DB Fr. HS 5-11/165 Jackson, TN (Trinity Christian)
13 Danny Woodson WR Fr. HS 6-1/205 Mobile, AL (LeFlore)

I'm not one to place much, if anything, on the value of numbers, but two interesting points here. One, Duron Carter, be prepared for the expectations to follow that jersey number given your build and who wore it the past three years. And, two, the gargantuan combo end-tackle LaMichael Fanning picked... 44? Very strange.

All the numbers notwithstanding, though, do notice that athlete Jabriel Washington is being listed as a defensive back, so despite being a bit undersized it looks like he will start at cornerback. Brent Calloway will begin at tailback, as expected, and pay attention to Jeoffrey Pagan being listed as defensive end (and not a DE / Jack like Xzavier Dickson). We'll see how it plays out, but Pagan was a Jack linebacker prospect before he blew his knee out last year, and with that injury in mind it certainly seems like the staff is planning on abandoning that altogether and instead just bulking him up to play with his hand on the ground every snap.
