Darius Philon Commits to Alabama

Defensive end Darius Philon has committed to Alabama. The commitment of the 6'2 and 282 pound defensive end out of Vigor High School continues a strong recruiting run in recent weeks for the Tide, and one that will hopefully continue in the near future with the commitment of Amari Cooper.

By committing to Alabama, Philon ends what had turned into a whirlwind recruiting process. His recruitment began to take off after an impressive junior season saw him rack up 89 tackles along the defensive line, and at that point he started to see some legitimate interest from BCS conference programs. Then, in late May, he decided to commit to Auburn, and remained an Auburn commitment for several weeks.

However, Philon attended a camp in Tuscaloosa in late June and impressed the 'Bama coaching staff with his performance. That camp performance earned him a 'Bama offer, and at that point he began to slowly retract his Auburn commitment. It started with official visit plans to Alabama, and finally in early August he de-committed from Auburn and the writing was on the proverbial wall.

Given his frame Philon expects to play defensive end in Tuscaloosa, and his commitment marks another addition to the defensive line in the 2012 recruiting class. The defensive line has been considered a relative weakness on the 2011 Crimson Tide, and to that end it is no real surprise that Alabama has targeted defensive linemen in this class. Philon is the fourth true defensive lineman Alabama has received a commitment from as of this writing, and 'Bama doesn't look to be done on the defensive line either.

As an added bonus, academics expect to be no real concern to Philon, who reports a 3.0 core GPA and a 20 on the ACT. Nothing has been said yet regarding the possibility of him enrolling early, but Philon has the grades to make that a legitimate possibility, and at the very least he will qualify with no concerns of him becoming an academic casualty.

Philon becomes the 18th commitment of the 2012 recruiting class.
