Days Until Michigan - Featured Movie: The Fifth Element

I'll be digging up some movies (some of which I haven't seen) that have the number of days til kick off, in the title.

The Fifth Element: This is a rather bizarre action/sci-fi (comedy?) film starring Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman, Chris Tucker and Milla Jovovich. Evil is coming and Jovovich and Willis work together to conquer it. Looking for suggestions as this wasn't one I actually wanted to promote.

The Sixth Sense: Starring Bruce Willis, this movie was the first major blockbuster directed by M. Night Shyamalan. This movie is a horror/thriller with a very surprising ending. Shyamalan tries to duplicate the story twist in other movies to a degree of much less success. This movie however was very well done and I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it already.

Seven & Seven Samurai- Went with two for this number, but there are several to choose from. Seven features Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman and Keven Spacey. This is a very graphic thriller where Kevin Spacey plays a serial killer who goes after victims who personify the seven deadly sins.

The Seven Samurai is a classic made in 1957. This is a Japanese action/drama where farmers hire the seven samurai to protect their crops from bandits during the harvest. Highly recommend.

Super 8 - In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth - something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.

The Whole Nine Yards is about a struggling dentist in Canada whose new neighbor is Jimmy "The Tulip" Teduski. His wife convinces him to go to Chicago and inform the mob boss who wants Jimmy dead. This is a great action/comedy starring Bruce Willis and Matthew Perry.

10 Things I hate About You is adapted from William Shakespeare's play "The Taming of the Shrew," 10 Things I Hate About You starts off with Cameron, new student at Padua High, sitting in the office of the quirky guidance counselor Ms. Perky. He is then shown around the school by Michael, who will become his best friend. During his tour is when Cameron first sees Bianca Stratford, a beautiful sophomore with one problem: she isn't allowed to date. And neither is her "shrew" sister, Katarina, a senior who loves indie rock and feminist prose and hates conformity. But Kat and Bianca's father alters his house rule: now, Bianca can date... as long as Kat has a date, too. Now, in order for Cameron to date Bianca, he has to find someone to date Kat. So Michael helps him enlist the help of pretty-boy/jerk/model Joey Donner, tricking him into thinking that *he* will get to take Bianca out if he pays someone to take out Kat...

I could have gone doom and gloom with the multitude of 9/11 documentaries/movies out there, but chose to go with something lighthearted instead by picking Ocean's Eleven - a 2001 remake of the 1960 orginal - features George Clooney, Brad Pitt and a slew of other A-List actors. If you haven't seen it, I would put on your must see category list. George Clooney stars as Danny Ocean, who wants to score the biggest heist in history. He combines an eleven member team. Their target? The Bellagio, the Mirage and the MGM Grand. All casinos owned by Terry Benedict. It's not going to be easy, as they plan to get in secretly and out with $150 million.

12 Monkeys - In a future world devastated by disease, a convict is sent back in time to gather information about the man-made virus that wiped out most of the human population on the planet.

Wow so many movies!! I'll go by genre: Horror - Friday the 13th (original) or Thirteen Ghosts (a 2001 remake of the 1960 orginal); Sci Fi - Thirteenth Floor - murder mystery released in 1999 about clues in a letter left in a computer generated parallel world that's just like the 30's with seemingly real people with real emotions; Action/Adventure - The 13th Warrior, another one released in 1999 and Docu/Drama - Thirteen Days, a movie about the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, seen from the perspective of the U.S. political leadership.

Here are some to choose from: 11:14 - a comedy/crime movie about five different perspectives on a car crach that occurred on 11:14; 14 Blades - A kung fu thriller set during the Ming Dynasty and centered on a secret service agent (Donnie Yen) in the emperor's court who is betrayed and then hunted by his colleagues; and Saturday the 14th, a spoof on Friday the 13th and other horro movies.

15 Minutes, is a 2001 film starring Robert Di Nero and Edwards Burns. It is about a homicide detective and a fire marshall who team up to stop a couple of Eastern European murderers who are videotaping their crimes in hope of becoming famous.

16 Candles - If I have to give a description about 16 candles, then you have serious movie issues - GO SEE IT IMMEDIATELY. Just in case - A great comedy featuring Molly Ringwald, who is playing a character named "Samantha." - who is turning 16. Problem is her birthday is the day before her big sister's wedding and everyone forgets her birthday. Good stuff - highly recommend.

Stalag 17 oldie but goodie released in 1957. tells the story of a group of American Airmen held in a WWII German prisoner of war camp, who come to suspect that one of their number is a traitor.

18 Again is a comedy with George Burns, and to my limited knowledge, was the first movie to start the whole persona/body swapping with a younger person theme. Burns plays a millionnaire (which was a big deal during its release in 1988) playboy who is about to turn 81. his grandson is about to turn 18, etc., etc.

K-19 The Widowmaker (finally a movie I have seen) - Highly recommend this one. Interesting tidbits: the movie was produced independently and released in 2002. At that time, it cost $100,000,000 to make but only netted about 65 million (ouch). This movie starrs Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson. The story takes place aboard a Russian, nuclear submarine which has a radiation leak. They have damaged their communications equipment during a pervious test manuever so they have limited options in seeking help. The U.S. finds them first and the drama begins.

20 Dates (didn't see it and appears to be low budget because the director stars in his own movie) is about a guy in LA looking for the woman of his dreams while trynig to start his film career. His idea is to have 20 dates filmed, (only sometimes informing his dates that they are being filmed). In the middle of this he finds the woman of his dreams but he wants to complete the "film" project.

"21" is the fact-based story about six MIT students who were trained to become experts in card counting and subsequently took Vegas casinos for millions in winnings. Other mentions include 21 Grams and 21 Jump Street (the recent remake).

22 Bullets: A French movie starring Jean Reno as a former mafia boss Charlie Mattei, who for three years led a peaceful life with his family until past catches up with him. Mattei is ambushed in a parking lot and left for dead with 22 bullets in his body. Against all odds, he survives to take revenge on his killers.

The Number 23: A 2007 psychological thriller, stars Jim Carrey in a more dramatic role The basic premise is Carey plays the role of Walter, whose wife bought him a book titled The Number 23. The book is about a detective who meets a woman with a bizarre obsession with the number 23. This obsession drives her to murder her boyfriend and commit suicide. Walter also becomes obessed and his life starts to mirror the book.

24 Hour Party People: DISCLAIMER: I have not seen this movie so I can't recommend it. Had trouble finding movies with 24 in the title. This is a British film that scored well by the critics. The story takes place in Manchester during 1976 - Cambridge educated Tony Wilson is at a Sex Pistols gig and becomes inspired by this pivotal moment in music history. He and his friends set up a record label and the rest is more of what transpires in the punk rock/dance/rave scene. Think British version of Studio 54. Let us know if anyone has seen this.

The 25th Hour. The main plot of the movie is about a drug dealer who has 1 day left before going to prison after being ratted out. Ed Norton plays the lead role.
