Results for Week 2
SB Nation BlogPoll College Football Rankings 2011
The results are in after two weeks of play and our own beloved Tide has put a strangle hold on #1, receiving 88 first place votes, with only LSU, USC, and Ohio State receiving votes as well. Thoughts, criticisms, etc:
Like on my ballot, LSU managed to jump the Trojans to the #2 spot, and you have to wonder if that was just a plain inevitability. For all the preseason hype that the media threw around about Southern Cal, it's been pretty clear that Alabama and LSU are just beyond the rest of college football at the moment as far as talent goes. That's not to say USC (or Oregon for that matter) won't eventually jump back past them, but LSU and Bama are the clear top two programs in the country right now and that's getting reflected in a lot of the polls.
Arkansas fell completely out but ULM didn't make it in (though I included them at #25) for the sake of LOL. Ohio did, though, which is probably a function of a lot of people ranking them after week one (like me) and then just leaving them since they didn't lose.
Georgia jumped up three spots to #5 after handling Missouri, and like I said on my ballot I think everyone was waiting for them to show that they're not the same old inconsistent UGA before passing judgement. Whether or not Mizzou will hold up as a quality win as the season wears on remains to be seen, but you have to imagine this is the kind of game they would have UGA'd away the last few seasons and the fact they didn't is a big sign of improvement.
South Carolina jumped up a spot, but throttling ECU even though your short handed isn't much to hang your hat on. Still not sure what to make of them.
Tennessee is the last ranked SEC team at #24, which is pretty much right for them as of now. They looked impressive against NC State and the FCS's Georgia State, but as soon as they hit a real defense you have to wonder if they'll be exposed as frauds or not.
As for the rest of the country, not a lot of thoughts beyond wondering what West Virginia did to make everyone mad, is Kansas State really that good or is everyone just happy to see Miami get taken behind the woodshed?, UCLA +21 spots has to be giving the gang over at Bruins Nation some very warm and inappropriate feelings, why don't I have TCU ranked?, and Baylor is probably the biggest sleeper team in the country right now, kinda wish I'd gotten gutsy and ranked them.
