Recruiting Update: Tennessee at Alabama

"The Third Saturday in October" (or Fourth Saturday this year) is always a big weekend for the Alabama Crimson Tide. But there is added value this year as some big-time recruits will be in Tuscaloosa this weekend. Below is a sampling:

Da’Shawn Hand is an elite athlete and a consensus 5-star from Woodbridge, VA. This 6-4 and 250 pounds defensive end will take an official visit to Alabama this weekend.

For a long time, Hand has appeared to be leaning towards Michigan where he officially visited back in early September. At the time, the Wolverines were riding high on a 41-30 win over Notre Dame. Seven weeks later, the high has worn off after Michigan slips by Akron (28-24) and UConn (24-21), and loses a heartbreaking four overtime game to Penn State two weeks ago. With the meat of their schedule ahead of them and not one a guaranteed win (@ Michigan State, vs Nebraska, @ Northwestern, @ Iowa, vs Ohio State ), one has to wonder if Hand will soften his feelings toward Big Blue.

Along with Michigan and Alabama, Florida is believed to be a finalist.

Elisha Shaw is a defensive tackle from Atlanta powerhouse Tucker HS. Alabama has never gotten a signee out of Tucker but the Bama staff is excited about him. Shaw has good size (6-4/295), is very athletic, and has good quickness off ball.

Bama is battling Georgia and Hugh Freeze's bizarre Ole Miss Kool-Aid mojo for his signature.

Another defensive lineman visiting on Saturday is Charles Mosley of Brighton, TN. He stands at 6-5, 330 lbs and is projected as a nose tackle. His size is a definite asset. It is a tight battle between the Crimson Tide and Tennessee but it is thought that he is leaning towards the Vols. It's probably not a good sign that he is coming for the UT game.

Three recruits who have already committed are scheduled to be in T-Town as well:

  • Bo Scarbrough was the first commitment to the Crimson Tide's Class of 2014 over a year ago. The RB/LB Athlete is 6-1/235. Originally from Tuscaloosa, he is spending his senior year at IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL. There is talk that he has some academics to work on.
  • CB Stephen Roberts (6-1/180) 4-star has been spending a lot of unofficial visits to Auburn lately which could be a bit concerning. However, it may just be because he lives in nearby Opelika, AL.
  • Shaun Dion Hamilton (6-0/235) 4-star commit from Montgomery, AL will also be in town. The Carver HS linebacker appears to be a pretty solid commitment. He has many offers including most of the SEC & ACC schools, Notre Dame, UCLA, and Southern Cal among others.
