Random Thoughts From Around the Country: Week Twelve

Da Bears!
Da Bears!
Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Baylor 63 Texas Tech 34

I have resisted for as long as I can. It might be time to start taking the Bears a little more serious. You can try to chip away at the schedule and the style points however with the exception of the Kansas State game (a 35-25 win on the road), Baylor has pretty much dominated the opposition by an average score of 61-17.

Quarterback Bryce Petty gets all the press but it's workhorse running back Shock Linwood who makes this team more complete. He went over 180 yards rushing for the second straight game.

That said, the season might come down to this Saturday as the Green and Gold travel to Stillwater to take on #10 Oklahoma State (7pm/8pm ABC). Lose that one and the Bears are done.

Side note: You may recall during the off-season the NCAA in their infinite buffoonery overturned the the Mountain West's ban on Boise's all-blue uniforms that matches their smurf-turf. By the same measure, Baylor wore all-greens on Saturday and I posit that it aided in at least one key play:

The top four teams still in contention to play in the BCS Championship Game (remember...crazier things have happened):

Alabama 10-0 (Chattanooga, @Auburn, SECCG)
Baylor 9-0 (@Okl St, @TCU, Texas)
Florida State 10-0 (Idaho, @Fla, ACCCG)
Ohio State 10-0 (Indy, @Michigan, B1GCG)

Dangling by a thread, hopin' 'n' prayin':

Auburn 10-1
Michigan State 9-1
Missouri 9-1
Oklahoma State 9-1
Oregon 9-1

Eliminated fer sure:

Stanford 8-2

Auburn 43 Georgia 38

With Thanksgiving a little more than a week away, I would like to take a moment to give thanks. I am grateful for Saturday's Auburn-Georgia TV broadcast because it has reinvigorated my disdain for everything Auburn. There is no way that they have paid off their Karma debt for the asterisk that was 2010 and the whole scandal that the NCAA just swept out the front door and left at the curb (yeah, I have a long memory and I hold grudges).

I am so disgusted with the way they won that game that I cannot even recap it, bear to post a photo of the big play, or even mention the name of one of their many mascots. With no disrespect towards Chattanooga, I encourage you to beat the rush and start a-hatin' now.

The Gators injury bug has now spread to the coaching staff. Head Coach Will Muschamp injured his hand after punching a chalkboard during halftime of this game. But this is an isolated incident for Coach Boom, right?

SOS Grab Bag:

Ohio State 60 Illinois 35 - Indiana beat the Illini one week prior to the tune of 52-35. Ergo, the Buckeyes should beat the Hoosiers by 8 this coming Saturday, right?

Colorado 41, California 24 - Speaking of Ohio State, their big non-conference BCS game this season was against Cal who now has the worst record (1-10) among teams in the five major conferences. OSU beat the Golden Bears 52-34 back in September. Impressed? Neither are the AP Poll voters.

Kansas 31, West Virginia 19 - WVU (4-7) is the only team to beat Oklahoma State this season. Even if crazy things happen, it'll be pretty difficult for the Cowboys to get into the big game.

Southern Cal 20 Stanford 17 - The loss by the Cardinal catapult Oregon back into the Pac-12 Championship Game but it hurts the Ducks in SOS.

Bama SOS:

Colorado State 66 New Mexico 42 - Former Bama OC Jim McElwain has the Rams (6-4) on the verge of bowl eligibility for the first time since 2008. They must defeat either Utah State (6-4) or Air Force (2-8) to get to seven wins. Due to their 13-game season (the Hawaii Exemption), they are required to win seven.

Maryland 27 Virginia Tech 24 (OT) - The Hokies' Jekyll and Hyde season rolls on as they fall to a 7-4 record. A trip to Virginia (2-8) rounds out their regular season.

Kristi Malzahn's "SHUT UP!" of the Week once again goes to the Miami Hurricanes after their 48-30 loss to Duke. Yes, I said Duke who is now 8-2 and leads the ACC Coastal Division. Three straight Miami losses sends the 'Canes from being ranked number 7 to 11 to 23 to unranked in consecutive weeks.

Other Grab Bag:

Navy 42 South Alabama 14 - I am sorry for Coach Joey Jones but Navy (6-4) is bowl eligible and should get at least one more win possibly two: San Jose State (5-5), Army (3-7).

Florida Atlantic 41 Southern Miss 7 - This is getting really sad for the Fight Favres after their 22nd straight loss. On the bright side, we get this: FAU!

* 65 teams are now eligible for the 70 bowl openings. 36 teams are no longer bowl eligible.

Alabama tight end Brian Vogler did not practice on Monday and is "day to day". He left the Mississippi State game on crutches with a sprained ankle. Tight end O.J. Howard and running back T.J. Yeldon were in black, non-contact jerseys. Howard was shaken up in the 4th quarter of the game and did not return. Yeldon sprained his ankle and was seen wearing a protective boot after the game. They should be available Saturday against the Mocs.

#16 Northern Illinois at Toledo 7:00 CT/8:00 ET, ESPN2 - I usually don't like to promote these midweek MAC games but the Rockets are the last real obstacle between the Huskies (10-0) and an undefeated regular season. Toledo is 7-3 but two of their losses were to Florida and Mizzou.

SATURDAY, NOV 23 Highlights:
#13 Michigan State at Northwestern 11am/12pm ESPN - Sparty is in line to face Ohio St in the B1GCG.
Duke at Wake Forest 11am/12pm ESPN2 - Duke controls their own destiny for the honor of getting the snot kicked out of them in the ACCCG.
Mississippi State at Arkansas 11:21am/12:21pm SEC - Will the Bullies bounce back?
Idaho at #2 Florida State 2:30/3:30 ESPNU - Expect green freshman QB Sean Maguire to get some snaps.
Indiana at #3 Ohio State 2:30/3:30 ABC or ESPN2 - Will Urban Meyer keep whining after giving up 24 to the Hoosiers?
#5 Oregon at Arizona 2:30/3:30 ABC or ESPN2 - The Ducks need to win big for any glimmer of hope.
#12 Texas A&M at #22 LSU 2:30/3:30 CBS - Game of the Week!
#17 Arizona State at #14 UCLA 6pm/7pm FOX - meh.
Kentucky at Georgia 6pm/7pm ESPNU - Does UGA have a hangover?
Vanderbilt at Tennessee 6pm/7pm ESPN2 - The 'Dores go for two in a row over the Vols for the first time since 1925-26.
#8 Missouri at #24 Ole Miss 6:45pm/7:45pm ESPN - Mizzou fighting for a chance to get to Atlanta.
#4 Baylor at #10 Oklahoma State 7pm/8pm ABC - Time to put up or shut up (Kristi will be watching).
