The Alabama Men's Golf team will be playing for their first National Championship on Sunday in Atlanta, GA.

On Saturday, the Crimson Tide defeated #2 Georgia Tech in semifinal match play on their home course 3-0-2.

The NCAA golf championships is spread out over a grueling six day tournament. The first three rounds are stroke play like a normal tournament where all team members play and the total scores determine which eight teams advance to match play. By finishing third, the Crimson Tide gained the 3-seed.

The next three days are match play where five players from each team are paired with an opponent for one-on-one competition. Whoever wins three or more matches moves on.

Friday's quarterfinals saw the Tide rout #6 New Mexico 4-1. The other three matches were all very close with each final score finishing 3-2 and two of the three had to go to extra hole tiebreakers.

The Tide's opponent for tomorrow #5 Illinois upset #1 Cal 3-2. In this round, the Illini once again had to go to extra holes to break the tie.

Cal, which dominated the field in stroke play, entered the tournament as the heavy favorite after winning 11 of 13 tournaments this season. The Illini entered the tournament unranked. Bama is #2.

Last season, Alabama lost the Championship on the final hole to Texas. On Friday, the 4-seed Longhorns lost to Illinois 3-2 in the quarterfinals .

Due to threatening weather, the final round will begin at 8am ET. If you are close to Atlanta, you are encouraged to come out a cheer on the Crimson Tide. Our roving reporter 5026 was on location Saturday and reports many Tide fans were on the course. He'd like to see you out there on Sunday. Info available at the Georgia Tech site.

If you cannot make it, you should be able to watch the match on the NCAA site.
