Predicting the 2013 SEC Football Season: Georgia Bulldogs

New, comments

With less than 90 days until the college football season begins, it's never too early to look at the 2013 football schedules and make wild blind predictions.

UGA fans say they were 5 yards from the National Championship. How far are they in 2013?

Georgia Bulldogs 12-2 (7-1) in 2012

Synopsis: 2012 was the year. Georgia has always had good quarterbacks and running backs but the defense wasn't always there. The 2012 Bulldogs had defense and a darn good one at that. That team had momentum and a shot at a national title. But Alabama linebacker CJ Mosley had other ideas.
It is now 2013. The quarterback is back and the running backs are back. However, a BIG chunk of that vaunted defense is gone (see below). In addition, starting safety Josh Harvey-Clemons is suspended for the opener against Clemson putting even more inexperienced bodies on the field. If the Dawgs get off to a slow start, their season could be over by week 2.
Key Losses: OLB Jarvis Jones, ILB Alec Ogletree, DT John Jenkins, SS Shawn Williams, CB Sanders Commings, WR Tavarres King, OLB Cornelius Washington, SS Bacarri Rambo, NT Kwame Geathers
Key Returners: QB Aaron Murray, RB Todd Gurley, RB Keith Marshall, WR/CB Malcolm Mitchell, CB Damian Swann, LB Jordan Jenkins, OL John Theus, OL Chris Burnette
Newcomers: DB Tray Matthews, DE Leonard Floyd, OL Brandon Kublanow, LB Tim Kimbrough

The Schedule:

8/31/13 at Clemson (Clemson, SC) - This is going to be a tough one and Coach Mark Richt has lost early non-conference high-profile games like this one in recent years (Boise in 2011, Oklahoma State in 2009). This game might finish 80 to 78 - Win
9/7/13 vs. South Carolina (Athens, GA) - Another toughie. Can Jadeveon Clowney play all 11 defensive positions and rush for 100 yards? Give the edge to the home team - Win
9/14/13 bye
9/21/13 vs. North Texas (Athens, GA) - Win
9/28/13 vs. LSU (Athens, GA) - Oh boy. Could UGA be 1-3 after this game? Not likely but the Dawgs always seem to have at least one epic fail - Loss
10/5/13 at Tennessee (Knoxville, TN) - Win
10/12/13 vs. Missouri (Athens, GA) - Win
10/19/13 at Vanderbilt (Nashville, TN) The 'Dores could pull this one out but not likely - Win
10/26/13 bye
11/2/13 vs. Florida (Jacksonville, FL) - Did I mention I cannot understand why UGA continues to agree to play this annual "neutral site" game in Jacksonville? Another nail-biter - Loss
11/9/13 vs. Appalachian State (Athens, GA) - Win
11/16/13 at Auburn (Auburn, AL) - Win
11/23/13 vs. Kentucky (Athens, GA) - Win
11/30/13 at Georgia Tech (Atlanta, GA) When is Tech going to give up on Coach Paul Johnson and his oddball philosophies of football? - Win

* As mentioned above, Richt's teams have a history of at least one big letdown. Clemson, SC, and LSU are toss-ups with Vandy as a possible upset. However it turns out, two losses look to be the outcome for UGA's 2013 regular season.
