Defensive Depth Chart '13-'15

Alright, everyone. In case you missed it, yesterday we posted the three-year depth chart for the offense. Now it's the defense's turn. As discussed yesterday, these depth charts are intended to be prospective, and dynamic. We'll be updating them regularly, so be sure to check in with them anytime you have a question. There was a bit of discussion about placement of a couple players yesterday, and I'll just say that, while the placement of players is generally where I'm anticipating they'll be in the future, the real value of this exercise is in evaluating depth. It helps us visualize our areas of need, as well as gives us a bit of insight into where we might expect our recruiting efforts to be focused.

If you missed it yesterday, here are the basic rules used to build the charts:

First off, some ground rules for the chart. For the purposes of carrying names forward, almost no one is considered to be leaving early for the NFL. I believe the only exceptions to this rule are T.J. Yeldon, Amari Cooper, and Cyrus Kouandjio. It would be a nightmare to try to project that out, and we've seen that even "can't miss" three-year players can sometimes end up playing four years (see: Barron, Mark). Potential transfers are also ignored.

Similarly, for the purposes of class designations, no players are assumed to redshirt. It's impossible for us to know for certain who will redshirt out of the new bloods this year, and even less possible to know who will redshirt among the '14 commitments. Also, since we're only going out three seasons, the redshirt issue is a non-factor in who will still be here, so it's best to just not worry with it.

Yes. I did say "commitments". As I mentioned, this depth chart is prospective, and dynamic. Right now, all '14 commitments are included in the chart. '15 commitments are not included, because those kids are still in diapers. These charts will be included in the section titled "Roll Bama Roll Welcome Center" below the main headlines on the main page, and will stay there, so you can always come back to reference them. We will continue updating the chart as new '14 commitments come in, or if something unexpected were to happen with the existing roster.
