While everybody in Tuscaloosa will be out tailgating for the Texas A&M football game on Saturday, the basketball squads, both men's and women's, will be taking to the court for a special preseason event. At 11:00 am CST Saturday, the basketball teams will kick off an hour long event on an outdoor court placed on the Quad. The event will include a skills competition, a three-point shootout, and even a small scrimmage. Fans will be able to tailgate for the Alabama football game while also checking out the basketball teams in an extremely convenient manner.
I think this is a fantastic idea, one that should help give both teams some good exposure. It's really a smart idea for the basketball teams to embrace the fact that Alabama is, and always will be, a football school, instead of hiding from it. Capitalizing off of the football team's success is a clever way to help grow interest in the basketball programs. This preseason event will probably be ten times better received and attended than a midnight tip-off like so many other college basketball teams have, and it's a good way to appeal to the casual basketball fans who will happen to be on the Quad tailgating.
So, if any of y'all are in town doing your typical tailgating thing, make sure to swing by and show some support for the basketball programs. I'm sure they would love to have a good turnout.
