Who Needs a Blogpoll: Week Nine - Wanna' Rematch, Ole Miss?

New, comments

Whole lotta cricket noises coming out of Norman these days; FSU remains the least self-aware program on the planet.

Let's engage in a thought experiment. First, look at the head-to-head wins and losses below. Next, look at the teams in the Top 10. Now, tell me how an illuminati panel is going to determine "the best four teams." This year, its first in existence, shows the problem with a college playoff and why there will be an inevitable playoff creep. There are easily eight or nine teams with a claim for one of those four spots. Fortunately, the SEC West bloodbath will do the committee's job for them, it seems. Nevertheless, playoff expansion is absolutely coming; if not for reasons of equity, then certainly for the boatloads of cash it will generate.

O, Hai!

West Virginia Mountaineers: huge win for Holgo and crew. When this team doesn't make mistakes, it is a force to be reckoned with in generous Big Twelve. LSU Tigers - A lot of teams have been beaten silly by Auburn and Mississippi State; not many of those have road wins against Wisconsin. Fournette has played himself to the top of the rotation of late.

Be Gone!

Rutgers Scarlet Knights - A lot of teams are getting smoked by the Buckeyes, but that was a systemic collapse. Iowa Hawkeyes, not noted for its offense, and having already lost a bad one to 2-5 Iowa State, came up short in a shootout to Maryland for its first conference defeat. That's a sentence I just typed. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets - Just doesn't quite have the horses to keep up in conference play...still looks like an 8-, 9-win team though. Texas fans have a saying to describe Texas A&M Aggies gaffes: Poor Aggie. Yup, that team is poor, but probably not as bad as they looked Saturday. Stanford Cardinal - back to the drawing board; too many losses on the defense and offensive line have derailed this rebuilding season. The PAC12 is not a forgiving mistress, either.

Social Promotion

Alabama - For the first time in years, this team plays so much better at home than on the road (hi, Auburn, Mississippi State games!) Ignore the Aggies' mistakes, that was as complete a game, and as thorough a demolition, as we've seen in years. Scary-good if the Tide can be consistent. Played like the best 1-loss in the country on Saturday. Ohio State really wants that Virginia Tech game back. Since the loss, and with Barrett at QB, they are absolutely beating the brakes off quality teams. You can say the same about the Oregon Ducks, for that matter. Speaking of regrouping in a big way, Georgia has stealthily worked its way back to respectability after a now awful-looking loss to South Carolina Gamecocks. Remember that time Oklahoma spent all offseason crowing and gloating, only to lose two out of three, including this week to Kansas State? I don't buy the TCU love, so I keep them hovering in the mid-teens, where they will belong after their soon-to-be second loss.

Held Back

Not your fault, East Carolina, there are just teams that are doing a lot more week-in-week-out. The same applies to the Utah Utes, a team that wins narrowly every week and just keep quietly flying under the radar. Also, a stagnation shoutout to the Nebraska Cornhuskers, who just can't break through to the upper echelon, and may not have many chances to do so in a poopy Big Ten-West. Florida State - Clemson gifted one game to the 'Noles; the #goacc refs very much gave them another victory. As with the PAC 12 and Oregon, the ACC knows where its sole bread is buttered and will protect FSU at all costs. Absolutely an indefensible call at that moment in the game. Notre Dame - technically has a loss; on the field, a better team than FSU. Remember that time we thought Baylor had a good defense....sometime last Thursday or so?

Last Out

Louisville Cardinals: the defense and special teams are hell on wheels; and, you have to think Petrino won't always have a bad offense. Missouri Tigers: One of the most maddening teams in the country, and with UGA in the rearview mirror, you don't see the Tigers really losing again...unless that awful inconsistency pops up again. Duke Blue Devils: I do not think this is one of the Top 25 teams in the country, yet. Ditto the Marshall Thundering Herd. For that matter, how much do you think the Colorado State Rams regret that bad loss in Boise? And, of course, take your pick over the reborn Wisconsin Badgers or the sneaky-decent 6-1 Minnesota Golden Gophers; both are your last out in a Big Ten without many bright spots.
