College Football Around the SEC: Week 10

Into the homestretch...

Chris Graythen
Win-Loss Record key:
  • SEC - conference record
  • P5 - non-SEC record against Power 5
  • MM - record against Mid Majors/Non-Power 5 but projected bowl participant
  • CC - record against cupcakes
Ole Miss Rebels (7-1, SEC 4-1, P5 0-0, MM 0-0, CC 3-0)

Auburn at Ole Miss 6:00 PM CT / 7:00 PM ET - ESPNESPN

The Rebs took their lumps on Saturday but got some good news on Tuesday with the return of three key figures: defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche, left tackle Laremy Tunsil, and safety Cody Prewitt. All three suffered injuries during Saturday's 10-7 loss to LSU but were all in uniform and pads during the portion of Tuesday's practice open to the media. They are expected to play in this week's game against Auburn despite coach Hugh Freeze describing the three as being "day-to-day".

LSU Tigers (7-2, SEC 3-2, P5 1-0, MM 0-0, CC 3-0)

LSU has a bye as they await the arrival of the Crimson Tide.

I don't want to freak Alabama fans out but there is something magical going on defensively in Baton Rouge. Outside of the Mississippi State outburst of points, John Chavis' defense has been pretty darn stingy in Tiger Stadium this season holding five of six visiting teams to 7 or less points:

9/6 Sam Houston W 56-0 - 0 points
9/13 UL Monroe W 31-0 - 0 points
9/20 Mississippi St L 34-29 - 34 points
9/27 New Mexico St W 63-7 - 7 points
10/18 Kentucky W 41-3 - 3 points
10/25 Ole Miss W 10-7 - 7 points

It will be Senior Night for the Bayou Bengals.

Auburn Tigers (6-1, SEC 3-1, P5 1-0, MM 0-0, CC 2-0)

Auburn at Ole Miss 6:00 PM CT / 7:00 PM ET - ESPNESPN

From the weird stat department comes this nugget: Auburn has attempted only two fourth down conversions all season, converting one. Both of their attempts have come in garbage time against cupcakes where they were just trying to run out the clock. By contrast, Baylor has attempted 25, converting 18. Alabama is 3 of 6. The national average is 11 attempts.

Tennessee Volunteers (3-5, SEC 0-4, P5 0-1, MM 2-0, CC 1-0)

Tennessee at South Carolina 6:30 PM CT / 7:30 PM ET - SEC Network

With Michigan coach Brady Hoke a dead man walking in Ann Arbor, one name that is surfacing as a potential replacement is Butch Jones. The native Michigander spent seven seasons as an assistant at Central Michigan, returning as head coach in 2007.

"It’s not even worth discussing," Jones told the press. "There’s no validity to it. I’m not even going to waste your time or my time even commenting on that. I think y’all know how I feel."

Can you imagine the Vols losing yet another coach after only two seasons?

South Carolina Gamecocks (4-4, SEC 2-4, P5 0-0, MM 1-0, CC 1-0)

Tennessee at South Carolina 6:30 PM CT / 7:30 PM ET - SEC Network

The Gamecocks are 100th in scoring defense giving up 32.8 points per game.

Texas A&M Aggies (5-3, SEC 2-3, P5 0-0, MM 0-0, CC 3-0)

Louisiana-Monroe at Texas A&M 11:00 AM CT / 12:00 PM ET - SEC Network

Look for the Aggies to wear a different kind of throwback uniform vs. ULM. They will be honoring the 1939 champion in unis that feature specially-designed helmets and cleats that mimic the look of the actual leather helmets and cleats worn by the team 75 years ago. The strange thing is that they will be wearing modern looking jerseys and pants. Check them out on the Aggies' home page.

Mississippi State Bulldogs (7-0, SEC 4-0, P5 0-0, MM 0-0, CC 3-0)

Arkansas at Mississippi State 6:15 PM CT / 7:15 PM ET - ESPN2ESPN2

The clanga-clangs got quite a scare on Saturday after Dak Prescott was seen wearing a walking boot after the Kentucky game. Despite the "precautionary" move, Dak fully participated in practice on Tuesday. Bulldogs fans have a right to be nervous. Prescott has taken every snap at quarterback for the last four games. Back-up QB Damian Williams has thrown 16 passes all season and they came against Southern Miss, UAB, and South Alabama in the first three weeks of the season. If Prescott were to go down, State would be in BIIIIIG trouble.

Missouri Tigers (6-2, SEC 3-1, P5 0-1, MM 0-0, CC 3-0)

Kentucky at Missouri 3:00 PM CT / 4:00 PM ET - SEC Network

Mizzou has taken winning ugly to new heights.

Florida Gators (3-3, SEC 2-3, P5 0-0, MM 0-0, CC 1-0)

Florida vs Georgia 2:30 PM CT / 3:30 PM ET - CBS

The Gators currently stand at 3-3 on the season with five games left to play due to the cancellation of the game with Idaho because of lightning. The two schools agreed to not reschedule the game allowing the Vandals to keep the $975,000 payday. That mistake might just cost the program a lot more than $975,000. With games against UGA, South Carolina, and FSU remaining on the schedule, there is a good chance the Gators will not reach the 6-win mark required to qualify for a bowl game and a $1 million+ pay-out.

Georgia Bulldogs (6-1, SEC 4-1, P5 1-0, MM 0-0, CC 1-0)

Florida vs Georgia 2:30 PM CT / 3:30 PM ET - CBS

This chapter of the Todd Gurley soap opera appears to be coming to an end. Much to the chagrin of a proactive UGA, the NCAA has handed down a 4-game suspension for the star running back's accepting "more than $3,000 in cash from multiple individuals for autographed memorabilia and other items." Gurley must also "repay a portion of the money received to a charity of his choice and complete 40 hours of community service as additional conditions for his reinstatement." Barring some unlikely appeal victory, he will be reinstated in time for the Auburn showdown on November 15.

Arkansas Razorbacks (4-4, SEC 0-4, P5 1-0, MM 1-0, CC 2-0)

Arkansas at Mississippi State 6:15 PM CT / 7:15 PM ET - ESPN2ESPN2

Before the season began, most people figured the Razorbacks' season would be all about Alex Collins & Jonathan Williams. However, it has transformed into being all about Jonathan Williams & Alex Collins. Williams has emerged from Collins' shadow to become the star of the Hogs' backfield. Although the stats are practically identical (Williams 122 rushes for 830 yards, 10 TDs; Collins 118 for 747 yards, 9 TDs), Williams has 344 yards in the last three games to Collins 126. The Allen, TX junior is starting to look like a real NFL prospect.

Vanderbilt Commodores (2-6, SEC 0-5, P5 0-0, MM 0-0, CC 2-1)

Old Dominion at Vanderbilt 6:00 PM CT / 7:00 PM ET - ESPNUESPNU

The Commodores tried out a fourth starting quarterback on the season but got the same result. Redshirt freshman Johnny McCrary, making his first career start, had the most productive day of any Vanderbilt quarterback this season, passing 17-of-31 for 196 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Despite the"improvement", the 'Dores took another loss 24-14 to Mizzou. Patton Robinette, Stephen Rivers, and Wade Freebeck have all taken their turns under center with very little success. Seems to me like Operator Error.

Kentucky Wildcats (5-3, SEC 2-3, P5 0-0, MM 0-0, CC 3-0)

Kentucky at Missouri 3:00 PM CT / 4:00 PM ET - SEC Network

The Wildcats are one win away from returning to a bowl game for the first time since they lost the BBVA Compass Bowl to Pitt 27-10 in the 2010 season. It won't be easy with trips to Missouri, Tennessee, and Louisville plus one home game with Georgia sandwiched in between.

Alabama Crimson Tide (7-1, SEC 4-1, P5 1-0, MM 0-0, CC 2-0)

Alabama has a bye as they set their sites on LSU.

Despite the CFB Playoff Committee ranking the Crimson Tide at #6 in the nation, most gambling outlets have Alabama as the favorite to win the whole she-bang. [This information is for entertainment purposes only.]
