Fall Alabama Football Practice #1: Suspensions, Injuries, and Academics. Oh My!

Well, you wanted Alabama football news. Here it is.

SUSPENSIONS:

Coach Nick Saban has announced that defensive linemen Jarran Reed, Brandon Ivory, and Tim Williams have been suspended for "violation of team rules and policies" and can return upon completion of the requirements of their suspensions. No specifics were given to how many games and what the offenses were. We know that juco transfer Reed was cited for DUI a few weeks ago. Expect Reed to at least miss the season opener against West Virginia but the other two could return before that game.

INJURIES:

Offensive lineman Leon Brown has an injured foot and "will be limited for some degree in practice for at least two weeks".

Cornerback Eddie Jackson was back at practice with a knee brace after rehabbing a spring practice ACL injury but they are bringing him along slowly.

Wide receiver DeAndrew White and defensive lineman Darren Lake have both been "100% all summer long."

ACADEMICS:

5-star Athlete Bo Scarbrough did not qualify. Alabama is appealing and "he is very close to qualifying. That will take some time," Saban said. "Our goal is to get him here in January."

OL Montel McBride did not qualify and has enrolled in junior college.

This should put the Crimson Tide at 85 scholarship players. Not to confuse things, but I believe Alabama will be able to count both Scarbrough and McBride's open slots back to 2014. Therefore, if Bo enrolls in January, he will not count against the 2015 recruiting class. Furthermore, there will be an additional scholarship to add to the 25 limit for McBride's non-qualification. [Please correct me if I am wrong]

POSITIONS:

Juco transfer Dominick Jackson was spotted playing right guard.

UPDATE: True freshman Cameron Robinson went through drills at first team left tackle. He was joined by Arie Kouandjio at left guard, Ryan Kelly at center, Alphonse Taylor at right guard and Austin Shepherd at right tackle. However, there is no guarantee this is how they will line up in the Georgia Dome on August 30th.

UPDATE: Jacob Coker lined up behind Blake Sims and Cooper Bateman in quarterback drills during the media’s viewing period. Alec Morris wore a red jersey and worked with the punters during this period (QBs and injured players wear black, offense wears white, defense and apparently kickers wear red.). That doesn't mean Morris did not work out with the QBs later in the practice but it's probably indicative of his status on the team.

DEAD RUMOR:

There were rumors floating around that a quarterback would be leaving the team, be it voluntarily or by dismissal. However, all signal callers were in camp.

The next practice is Saturday afternoon with Fan Day scheduled for Sunday. The Tide's 2:30 p.m. practice on Sunday at Bryant-Denny Stadium is open to the public with players and coaches available for autographs following practice at approximately 4:45 p.m. lasting for 45 minutes.
