Nick Saban Press Conference Recap

  • Starts out by talking about the bye week and what the team focused on.
  • He isn't sure if the bye gives a team an advantage or disadvantage.
  • Each player is met with and they talk with the staff about what he can do to improve.
  • DeAndrew White will be the only player limited today at practice.
  • Blake Sims was able to throw some last week and he's confident he'll be OK by this Saturday.
  • Talks about going on the road for the first time in the SEC and how the things Ole Miss does poses a challenge (game management/noise).
  • Preparation is really, really important in a game like this.
  • Executing is "the most important thing" when playing on the road.
  • Ole Miss' defense is really aggressive and is the best defense we've played all year (says same about the team).
  • They have a ball hawking secondary.
  • Compliments Bo Wallace for how he's managed the offense so far this season.
  • Singles out Treadwell and the offensive line for improvement over previous years.
  • Eddie Jackson is "getting there". Tony Brown and Jackson will compete all week for the starting corner spot opposite Cyrus Jones.
  • Gets a question about the SEC West and having to play well every week. High level of competition is there every year but even greater this year.
  • Mentions how each week you have to be ready to play. Uses Tampa Bay Bucs getting blown out one week and then upsetting the Steelers and how important focus is. "Happens in college too".
  • Talks about how Bo Wallace has matured in his decision making. Points to their explosive plays  "Down the field" as an example.
  • Both Jarrick Williams and Dominick Jackson are "physically" ready but "just because they are healthy doesn't mean they are immediately ready to play."
  • Ole Miss' quickness on defense (up front) has given us issues in the past. They are quick off the edge. Singles #10 (C.J. Johnson) as a guy who is a good pass rusher.
  • Pace of play question: Would like to play more guys at LB and DB (like they have at DL).
  • Says the Bama offense being able to control drives has helped our defense against hurry up teams (so far this season
  • Question: "Has (Saban) seen the level of respect Sims gets from his team mates?" Saban: "There's no question about it. If you watch the games you can see that"
  • Points to negative plays and turnovers (from Sims) on areas he needs to improve in.
  • Wants to see Sims communicate and manage the offense (silent count) on his first road game.
  • Doesn't consider the WVU game a road game
  • Laquon Treadwell is the complete package. Can block, very physical, good hands and has good speed.
  • Says trying to put one guy on Treadwell makes it difficult for the defensive guy covering him to get set. So the guy who is covering him on any given play will have to do a good job.
  • Compares kickers to golfers (staying focused and not trying to over correct when bad things happen) Doesn't understand why the #1 player in the world would change their golf swing.
  • Says Griffith and Scott do a good job in working on staying consistent and not getting frustrated.
