January 14 is a big date for Alabama recruiting. First, it is is the last day to register at the Capstone for the 2015 Spring Semester. With this day passing, there will be no chance for 5-star wide receiver Calvin Ridley to enroll early and thus participate in spring football. The following players are currently enrolled as freshmen, plus one junior:
Blake Barnett QB
Deionte Thompson S
Desherrius Flowers RB
Dallas Warmack OG
Ronnie Harrison S
Brandon Kennedy OG
Jonathan Taylor DT (juco)
January 14 is also the last day of the dead period in which coaches are limited in their contacts and evaluations of recruits, as well as permitting official or unofficial visits. Henceforth, the recruiting rush is on.
This weekend, the Crimson Tide will be hosting an array of blue-chippers. The following is a list of known official visitors to Tuscaloosa for this weekend as of post time.
WIDE RECEIVER
Daylon Charlot (6-0/193) who electrified the crowd with his kick returns in the Under Armour All-American Game, has twice decommitted from Alabama. Word is that the 4-star is getting heavy pressure from his family to stay close to his Patterson, Louisiana home and go to LSU. His indecision has sent the Bama staff in search of an alternative second receiver to add to this class.
K.J. Hill (6-0/188) attends the same high school, North Little Rock, that Bama's Altee Tenpenny attended. He committed to the Hogs back in August but the recent sudden departure of Razorback offensive coordinator Jim Chaney to Pitt has Hill thinking. [UPDATE: Hill decommitted from Arkansas on Sunday evening.]
Things are heating up with Lawrence Cager (6-5/195). The Towson, MD pass-catcher committed to Miami on January 3 during the Army All-American Bowl but some observers are not so sure he is solid to the 'Canes. He is scheduled to visit Miami the following weekend. If he takes that trip, I would think the Tide moves on to other options.
OFFENSIVE TACKLE
Nick Saban would really like to add one more pure tackle to this class and he has aligned some good options. One of them is 4/5 star Drew Richmond. The Memphis native is committed to Ole Miss but could be wavering after the Rebels disastrous Peach Bowl. At 6-5/310, Richmond will be ready to compete in 2015. He will visit Oxford Jan. 23. [UPDATE: Richmond had a death in the family and will not visit Tuscaloosa this weekend. The chances of signing him are slim if the Bama staff cannot reschedule him.]
Isaiah Prince from Greenbelt, MD (Washington DC suburb) is also scheduled to be on campus. The 6-6/272 4-star will likely need to put on some bulk before he can compete for a starting position.
RUNNING BACK
4-star Johnny Frasier (5-10/229) has shown some late interest in Alabama, yet one has to wonder if Damien Harris' commitment last week scares him off a bit. He is a soft commit to FSU with nearby NC State looking like the favorite to get the flip. Frasier is from Princeton, NC.
DEFENSIVE END/TIGHT END
Tyrone Wheatley Jr. (6-6/245) excelled on both sides of the ball at his Buffalo, NY high school and is being recruited as an "Athlete". He is visiting Bama, Southern Cal, UCLA, and Oregon. His dad was just hired by Michigan so don't count them out. I doubt this "tourist" ends up in crimson and white.
In an interesting turn of events, former 2016 DE/TE Prince Tega Wanogho Jr. just this week found out that he can graduate from Edgewood Academy in Elmore, AL this spring and reclassify to the Class of 2015. The Nigeria native moved to Alabama last August. He is still learning the game and is a bit of a project. However, he is a 6-8, 250-pound athlete who could play on either side of the ball. As a 2016 recruit, he was rated 4-stars as the nation's #6 DE and the #5 TE. Offers have been pouring in but not yet from Alabama as of yet. The Tide will have to do some serious scrambling if they want to squeeze him into this class. (Wanogho has yet to set up any visits.)
THE COMMITTED
The following young men will be on an official visit as well but have already committed to sign with Alabama:
Kendall Sheffield Fort Bend Marshall (Missouri City, TX) CB 6-0/181
Daron Payne Shades Valley Sch (Birmingham, AL) DT 6-2/325
Adonis Thomas Central Gwinnett (Lawrenceville, GA) OLB 6-3.5/229
Anfernee Jennings Dadeville (Dadeville, AL) DE 6-3/256
Joshua McMillon Whitehaven (Memphis, TN) OLB 6-3/239
Christian Bell Hoover (Birmingham, AL) DE 6-4/220
