Softball: Opening Weekend

University of Alabama Photos

Thursday night opened the season with a mammoth pitchers duel in Mobile, and the ladies waited until the top of the seventh inning to bring two runs to the plate and avoid drawing their first opening season shutout loss since 1998. Farrish Beard pitched 6.1 spectacular innings then a Demi Turner [2B] bunt-hit and follow up steal frazzled the Jaguars pitcher leading to a Haylie McCleney [CF] walk, who recorded no official at bats for the night [3 HBP, 1 BB]. Chandler Dare [LF] then singled the tying run home and a fielding error by the center fielder allowed Demi to score the go-ahead run. The heralded freshman Alexis Osorio, who replaced Leslie Jury in the bottom of the sixth after loading the bases with one out, pitched 1.2 impressive innings picked up the win (1-0).

Friday opened the first day of two double-headers Sidney Littlejohn (1-0) pitched five perfect innings picking up the Tide's second win of the season versus the Eastern Kentucky Colonels. Haylie McCleney was also perfect at the plate doubling in the second and third and bringing two RBI's to the plate.  Demi Turner also turned in a perfect performance (2-2, 2 St, 2R) while Danielle Turner turned in a solid time-card (2-3, RBI).

Alabama (3-0) faced the Houston Cougars Friday evening in a game that was started thirty minutes early with the ladies winning 6-2. Alexis Osorio (2-0) pitched a two-run complete game with a laser-targeting device on the strike zone, registering 13 strikeouts. Alabama's bats kept warm from the afternoon's performance with a three-run second inning five batters strung together hits that lead to three runs, which put the Crimson Tide ahead for good.

Saturday's double-header started with the ladies against Florida Gulf Coast, winning in five innings 13-1. Alexis Osorio (3-0) was given the circle again and allowed one walk and eight strikeouts in a five-inning complete game. Bama's (4-0) bats scored in the second and third before blowing the game open with a seven run fourth which showcased seven runs on four hits, two errors, and three illegal pitches from the Eagles' pitching staff.

Senior Leslie Jury (2-0) pitched a five-inning complete game allowing two ‘garbage time' runs in the fifth as Bama (5-0) defeated FIU 11-2. The bats were silent until a five-run fourth and six-run fifth [try saying that fast three times] that showcased a Leona Lafaele three-run home run (1) in the fifth, a Demi Turner 2 RBI triple in the fourth, and 2 RBI double from Danielle Richard in the fifth and a double from McCleney that brought home a run.

Sunday saw Sidney Littlejohn (2-0) pitch five shutout innings and Leslie Jury pitch the final two in relief as Alabama (6-0) defeated McNeese State 4-0. Leona Lafaele doubled with one out in the first; Danae Hays had a RBI single then Demi Turner hit a two-out double scoring two. McNeese State loaded the bases in the top of the third with two out but failed to bring anyone home. Danielle Richard hit a RBI single in the fifth for the final run of the weekend.

Demi Turner named Tournament MVP after going 9-14 (.643) with 4 RBI, 6R, and 1BB. Sydney Littlejohn, Alexis Osorio, Leslie Jury and Haylie McCleney were also named to the Sand Dollar Classic All-Tournament team.

We'll be doing a breakdown of the lineup, field positioning, and other various things you may or may not know about this team and how things look of how things went versus Samford on Wednesday along with a peek ahead to the Stanford Nike Invitational in California Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
