According to USA Today, Houston will hire Lane Kiffin as its next head coach:
Houston has decided on Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin to be its next football coach, pending a Thursday meeting at which school President Renu Khator will have to give the final OK, two people with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports. Those people spoke on the condition of anonymity because the school had not yet announced the move.
Congratulations to Lane, but this is certainly an unneeded distraction for a team that’s favored to win a national title. Here’s hoping he follows Kirby’s lead and sticks around for the playoff run.
Hope for the best.
Roll Tide.
Update: The Houston Chronicle is pumping the brakes a bit:
UH is still considering a list of finalists that includes in-house candidates, interim coach/defensive coordinator Todd Orlando and offensive coordinator Major Applewhite, and former LSU coach Les Miles. Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley is no longer under consideration, a source said Wednesday.
Looking at that list, Kiffin seems like a slam dunk. Still, something to keep an eye on.
