Incoming head coach Barry Odom is off to a good start securing in-state talent. The most recent acquisition was flipping Alabama TE commit Brendan Scales. Scales never seemed a firm commit, having only given Alabama a verbal late in the game. He visited the Tide on Jan. 15th and made his commitment then. Two weeks later, he chose to stay home with the Tigers.

Scales has great size, and is a 3* from Lafayette (MO) (and the No. 17 overall) tight end. The Tide, who appeared to be taking two tight ends this class, are now left looking to fill a position of serious need following the graduation of Ty Flournoy-Smith this year, and the 2016 graduation of O.J. Howard and Dakota Ball. There are young guys on the roster at present, but none are game-tested, and certainly none are playmakers in Howard's class.
