Nike hosts many regional events throughout the spring for high school athletes to attend. At the end of it all, the top 166 are selected to compete in the final event in Oregon.
Here, there will be a myriad of position drills, media events, 7-on-7 championships, and, of course, SPARQ testing. As usual, Alabama leads the nation in the number of commits attending this prestigious event, and all of them are on the same 7-on-7 team.
Team "Vapor Speed" includes five star running back Najee Harris, the top player in the nation, dual-treat Hawaiian signal caller, Tua Tagovailoa, and towering receiver Tyrell Shavers on offense. Linebackers VanDarius Cowan and Markhail Benton fortify the defense, along with rangy safety Xavier McKinney. Though he won't be in the tournament, and offensive linemen typically do their own thing throughout the event, five star offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood is also technically on this team too.
The biggest news here is that former Tide commit and 5-star running back, Cam Akers, is also on this team. We've seen numerous times over the last few years when an undecided prospect on the Opening team filled with Alabama commits often ends up becoming great friends with this group, eventually committing to Alabama. Akers is already familiar with the program, and bringing him back would be huge.
