Alabama Football Roster Updates: Jersey Numbers New & Changed

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

In case you missed it (I know I did), seccountry.com got a hold of a Bama media guide at SEC Media Days and posted the heights, weights and jersey numbers for Alabama’s newbies. Here they are with a few of my comments.

1 LB Ben Davis, 6-4, 234 pounds
2 QB Jalen Hurts, 6-2, 209 pounds - Enrolled in January, played well in the A-Day game.
2 DB Jared Mayden, 6, 200 pounds
3 LB Lyndell Wilson, 6-2, 244 pounds - Recovering from a torn labrum, may be forced to redshirt.
5 DB Shyheim Carter, 6, 190 pounds - A likely indication that Ronnie Clark (also #5) stays on the offensive side.
6 RB B.J. Emmons, 6, 206 pounds
7 ATH Trevon Diggs, 6-2, 195 pounds - Position is TBA but I think he plays defense.
13 DB Nigel Knott, 5-11, 175 pounds - He could probably use a few pounds.
14 WR Gehrig Dieter, 6-3, 207 pounds - Time to learn how to spell this grad-transfer's name, y'all! Gehrig, like the baseball player; Dieter like someone on a diet, but pronounced "Deeter".
16 WR T.J. Simmons, 6-2, 201 pounds - Enrolled in January, played in A-Day.
19 LB Shawn Jennings, 6-1, 220 pounds - Enrolled in January, played in A-Day.
23 DB Aaron Robinson, 6-1, 181 pounds
24 LB Terrell Hall, 6-5, 247 pounds
25 RB Joshua Jacobs, 5-10, 204 pounds
65 OL Deonte Brown, 6-4, 350 pounds
73 OL Jonah Williams, 6-5, 296 pounds - Enrolled in January, possible starter at right tackle.
76 OL Scott Lashley, 6-7, 313 pounds - Rivaling Matt Womack (6-7/320) for biggest on the team.
79 OL Chris Owens, 6-3, 304 pounds - Enrolled in January, played in A-Day.
82 TE Irvin Smith, 6-4, 235 pounds
87 TE Miller Forristall, 6-5, 225 pounds - Enrolled in January, played well in A-Day, former QB, should see playing time this fall.
90 DL Jamar King, 6-4, 290 pounds - Juco transfer
92 DL Quinnen Williams, 6-4, 284 pounds
99 DL Raekwon Davis, 6-7, 315 pounds - More than a big'n. He's a Large'n.

NUMBER CHANGES:

  • WR Robert Foster has gone from 8 to 1.
  • QB Blake Barnett snatches up 8, his high school number.
  • WR Cam Sims adds a digit from 7 to 17.
  • DB Deionte Thompson will wear 14.
  • Keaton Anderson moves to a more linebackerish number of 31 from 18.

STILL ON THE OFFICIAL BAMA ROSTER

  • Tony Brown is facing some nebulous "indefinite NCAA suspension". However, he ran track for the Tide this spring, earning All-American honors in the 110-meter hurdles. This should be a positive sign of his return to the football team at some point this fall.
  • In a bit of a surprise move, Maurice Smith had announced in June his intentions to transfer. Surprising because he is a rising senior and an intricate part of the defensive and special teams plans for 2016. (Plus, it's Bama for Pete's sake! Why would you want to trade prime rib for hamburger?) He has been on campus for three years. Sources say he is supposed to graduated in early August. There is an outside chance he could stay with the Tide.
