This one is as baffling as Maurice Smith (but a little less so than Shawn Burgess-Becker,) RS Freshman cornerback Kendall Sheffield is no longer with the team and will be seeking a transfer.
Putting the story together from various sources, it played out like this: Sheffield, upset with the depth chart and playing time, split Tuscaloosa after Saturday’s scrimmage back to Texas. He did not practice on Sunday and missed the two-a-days on Monday. That evening, Travis Reier reported that his future with the Tide was seriously in doubt. Yesterday Sheffield again missed practice, and Saban made a rare plea in his Tuesday conference saying that Sheffield was welcome back and he was wanted on the team.
Then today, with classes starting at Alabama and the fall camp season officially over, Sheffield was a no-show and announced his departure.
The usual rules apply: Sheffield was released from his scholarship at Alabama but may not attend an SEC school. Casagrande’s story is here.
I’ll let y’all fight about depth below (you know where I stand: we are one injury away from having three freshmen in the CB two-deep, so there’s no need belaboring this one.)
But, I do have one question: what’s in the water that VHT Texas DBs are drinking? Corner is notoriosuly difficult to play under Saban: To be given any consideration as a RS Freshmen is almost unheard of. And, in Smith’s case, he’ll be battling for the nickel corner job at UGA, where it’s not a guarantee he’ll even win that spot.
