Ten Alabama True Freshmen Saw Action Against Southern Cal

No redshirts for ten freshmen, two of whom were starters.

Eleven members of the 2016 recruiting class saw game action on Saturday against Southern Cal, ten true freshman and juco transfer DL Jamar King.

With the Crimson Tide lining up in a two tight end set for the first play, Miller Forristall was the end opposite O.J. Howard. At right tackle on the first play was Jonah Williams. Forristall did not record any receptions.

Although not starting, Jalen Hurts saw the majority of the snaps at quarterback. He was 6 of 11 passing for 118 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. was also credited for nine rushes for 36 yards and two more scores. The Channelview, Texas native also lost a fumble on his first play.

Hurts, Forristall, and Williams were all early enrollees.

Of three kickoffs by the Trojans, Trevon Diggs was only able to return one for 24 yards. The other two were touchbacks.

Joshua Jacobs and B.J. Emmons both saw time at running back. Jacobs took the first snap of the second half for a five yard gain. he had another run of five, followed by gains of 2 and 8 in the fourth quarter, just before Blake Barnett connected with Gehrig Dieter for a 45 yard touchdown.

Emmons entered the game in the second quarter with the score still in Southern Cal's favor 3-0. He rushed for no gain. His next carry would come in the third with the tide up 31-3. After a four yard carry he fumbled but recovered the ball. For the last Alabama possession of the game, the Morganton, NC native would carry four straight times for gains of 6, 3, 2, and 1.

Also seeing action but recording no statistics were DB Aaron Robinson, DB Jared Mayden, DL Terrell Hall, and WR T.J. Simmons. Simmons was an early enrollee.

NON-PARTICIPANTS:

  • Ben Davis LB Gordo, AL - Don't be surprised if he redshirts to learn this complex defense. He served on scout team this past week.
  • Lyndell "Mack" Wilson LB Montgomery, AL - Suffered a torn meniscus in June and underwent surgery. He was dressed for the game. Likely redshirt.
  • Quinnen Williams DT Birmingham, AL - He made the trip to Texas but was not listed on the participation list.
  • Raekwon Davis DT Meridian, MS - There is some concern about his academic eligibility. He was not seen in Texas. In his Monday press conference, Nick Saban said there is no update on his status.
  • Nigel Knott DB Madison, MS - Suffered a knee injury in August, underwent surgery, likely redshirt.
  • Shyheim Carter ATH Kentwood, LA - I could've sworn I saw him play but he did not make the participation list.
  • Chris Owens OL Arlington, TX - Likely redshirt
  • Deonte Brown OL Decatur, AL - Likely redshirt
  • Shawn Jennings DB Dadeville, AL - Likely redshirt
  • Scott Lashley OL West Point, MS - Likely redshirt
  • Irv Smith TE New Orleans, LA - Likely redshirt, unless everyone is not keeping up with their hoodoos and someone gets injured.
