Alabama Football Recruiting Update: Decommitment Opens Up Another Slot

The other shoe finally dropped.

Yea, Alabama!

The least surprising moment of Alabama’s 2017 recruiting season finally occurred when Jhavonte Dean “decommited” from the Crimson Tide on Saturday. The juco defensive back had long been thought to have fallen in the eyes of the Tide staff. It is not a dire situation for Dean. Miami has been courting him for several months and he is expected to sign with the Hurricanes. We wish him the best of luck in Coral Gables or wherever he lands.

In related news, another Bama commit, Hunter Brannon, received a scholarship offer from new FAU! head coach Lane Kiffin on Thursday. The future of the 3-star center has been bandied about the last few months, including the theory that he might be asked to greyshirt at Alabama. Brannon is believed to also have offers from Appalachian State, Central Arkansas, Jacksonville State, and Southern Miss.

The departure of Dean leaves the Tide with 24 commits, 12 of which have already enrolled. It is widely believed that Alabama can go over the 25 scholarship limit this year, but that may remain unknown until NSD on Feb. 1.

The Alabama staff appears to be looking to add at least one wide receiver, a couple of defensive linemen, and perhaps some secondary help. Among the candidates:

DE Jarez Parks
DE LaBryan Ray
DE Ryan Johnson
DT Aubrey Solomon
DT Phidarian Mathis

WR Devonta Smith
WR Henry Ruggs
WR Nico Collins

DB Christopher Henderson
S Devon Hunter
S Todd Harris
