Predicting the 2017 SEC Football Season: LSU Tigers

With less than 25 days until the college football season begins, it's never too early to look at the 2017 football schedules and make wild blind predictions.

Meet the new coach. Same as the old coach...

Coach: Ed Orgeron (6-2 in a partial season at LSU; 4-2 in SEC)

LSU 2016 record: 7-4 (5-3 in SEC, tied for 2nd in West Division)

CB969 2016 Prediction: 9-3 "...Somehow, Les Miles got a last minute reprieve from getting the axe, but can he learn from his mistakes and show some progress?"

Looking back: One of the weirdest wackiest seasons of recent memory belong to the 2016 Bayou Bengals. It fittingly began with an inexplicable cheap shot against Wisconsin. In Game 4, LSU defeated Auburn on a last second touchdown and Gus Malzahn was looking like he might be fired. Only moments later, a replay showed that LSU had not gotten the snap off in time and it was Miles who was fired hours later. And then there was that whole embarrassing Hurricane Matthew pissing match with Florida. Things could’ve gone sideways, but Coach O did a decent job of holding things together including shutting up Louisville in the Citrus Bowl 29-9.

Returning starters: 6 on offense, 4 on defense, punter.

Key losses: RB Leonard Fournette (Round 1, Jaguars), S Jamal Adams (Round 1, Jets), CB Tre'Davious White (Round 1, Bills), C Ethan Pocic (Round 2, Seahawks), LB Duke Riley (Round 3, Falcons), LB Kendell Beckwith (Round 3, Buccaneers), DT Davon Godchaux (Round 5, Dolphins), WR Malachi Dupre (Round 7, Packers), WR Travin Dural, DE Tashawn Bower, DE Lewis Neal, RT Maea Teuhema (suspended/transfer), TE Colin Jeter, PK Colby Delahoussaye.

Top returnees: RB Derrius Guice, LB Arden Key, DB Donte Jackson, DL Christian LaCouture, LT K.J. Malone, C Will Clapp (formerly LG), DL Rashard Lawrence, WR D.J. Chark, P Josh Growden, Defensive Coordinator Dave Aranda.

Also returning: QB Danny Etling (coming off back surgery).

Top newcomers: DT Tyler Shelvin (Lafayette, LA), DB JaCoby Stevens (Murfreesboro, TN), LB Jacob Phillips (Nashville, TN), OL Austin Deculus (Cypress, TX), DB Grant Delpit (Bradenton, FL), DE K'Lavon Chaisson (Houston, TX), DB Todd Harris (Plaquemine, LA), LB Patrick Queen (Livonia, LA), Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada.

Names you need to know: Derrius Guice might actually be better than that Fournette guy. Arden Key is likely bound for the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft but he is coming off offseason shoulder surgery.

Strengths: Dave Aranda and Matt Canada are top notch coordinators. Don’t be surprised if they get head coaching jobs real soon... decent depth behind Guice with Darrel Williams and Nick Brossette... Arden Key if he is healthy and keeps a good attitude...

Weaknesses: Depth and injury issues on the O-line... Etling will not win the Heisman this year. He just needs to make sure he does not lose any games... Receiving corps is light... Many losses on defense... Breaking in a new kicker... Oct 7-Nov 25! Yikes! How does Joe Alleva keep his job?

Outlook: The Tigers lost a lot of depth and many of those returning are recovering from injuries. Fortunately, the front end of their schedule is favorable. It will give them time to feel out Canada’s new offense. However, when the calendar flips to October, it’s seven straight brutal SEC games. Personally, I don’t have much faith in Ed Orgeron’s head coaching abilities to go any further beyond nine or so wins. He is a great rah-rah guy but that only gets you so far.

Sep 9 vs Chattanooga 6:30pm CT SECN - W
Sep 16 @ Mississippi St. 6pm CT - W - This is a dangerous game.
Sep 23 vs Syracuse - W
Sep 30 vs Troy - W
Oct 7 @ Florida - L - Gators want revenge!
Oct 14 vs Auburn - W - This could be a toss-up but Aubie has not won in BR in this millennial (1999) and I’m not buying their hype just yet.
Oct 21 @ Ole Miss - W
Oct 28 Bye Week
Nov 4 @ Alabama - L
Nov 11 vs Arkansas - W
Nov 18 @ Tennessee - W
Nov 25 vs Texas A&M - W

Let's go Bowling! Yes, they have a shot at a New Year’s 6 Bowl but more likely they land in one of the Florida bowls.

I know I have LSU at a 10-2 record and that sounds ridiculous. They are bound to lose a third (or fourth) regular season game to someone they should not.
