If you’ve not seen New Mexico, you should

NCAA Football: New Mexico Bowl-New Mexico at Texas-San Antonio Ivan Pierre Aguirre-USA TODAY Sports

There’s just one game on tonight, and it has the potential to get weird. The Boise State Broncos, fresh off of blowing a three-touchdown lead in a heartbreaking three-OT loss in Pullman returns home to face Bob Davie’s New Mexico Lobos on the Smurf Turf.

Why should you watch? Do you like power football? Do you scream ‘RUN THE DAMN BALL’ on non-standard downs? Of course you do. Tonight is for you.

New Mexico runs one of the most innovative offenses you’ll see. Operating in the space between Ault’s pistol (think Kaep’s heyday in Nevada) and the service academy/GT flexbone, the Lobos have a shotgun triple option that borrows much from both and incorporates veer concepts from the spread option teams. Like all triple option teams, it is an uptempo offense and a nightmare to prepare for with just a week’s worth of practice.

Making this more interesting are the problems the Broncos have in the passing game. With Brett Rypien’s injury last week, Boise looked lost on offense when it needed it the most. BSU will play senior grad transfer Martell Cozart...from Kansas. The only other QB is a true freshman Coach Harsin wants to redshirt. To that, add an NCAA investigation opened this week into Davie’s Albuquerque program.

Realistically, the Broncos have far more talent than the Lobos. But, with the injuries, the potential for a looming hangover by the home favorites, the uniqueness of an offense that literally no one else runs, and the off-field distractions, this game could get a little funky.

If nothing else, you’ll get to see a lot of sweet manball.
