WAKE UP! Week Four college football schedule, why-to-watch viewers guide and morning thread

NCAA Football: Southwest Classic-Arkansas vs Texas A&M
Someone’s getting fired.
Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Conference play begins this week for about half of the country, and there are few games of import: Can Michigan get out if its offensive funk on the road vs. Jeff Brohm’s good-ish Purdue squad? Which Bulldogs are real? We’ll figure it out when the Bulldogs travel to Athens to play the ‘Dawgs. After Auburn’s hard week can they get it together on the road versus a suddenly-terrible Mizzou team? How will Alabama look in its first true road game against the undefeated ‘Dores? That, and much more.

Today’s College Gameday is in New York City for the first time -- Times Square to be precise. I rolled my eyes at the patent suck up the largest television market in the country. Then, I read this great little piece at the Mothership and realized that many, many people will be excited in the Big Apple. While the New England seaboard isn’t a CFB hotbed, there are hundreds of thousands of transplants who are from places where football reigns.

Until the ‘Bama game starts, we’ll have our eyes on:

Texas A&M vs. Arkansas (-2.5) in Jerry World 11:00 a.m. Central

Who gets fired first? This winner of this game isn’t off the hot seat, but the loser may very well not make it until Halloween. This is as big an early season game as you’re going to see in the SEC. On paper the Ags should line up and run it down the throat of an impotent Hogs defense. In readlity, they’ll throw the ball 30 times with Freshman Kellen Mond and collapse defensively when it matters most. Flip a coin for who prepped the worst. Then flip it again for who adjusts more poorly.

Texas Tech at Houston (-7) 11:00 a.m. Central

Major Applewhite’s squad is undefeated, but the Cougs just feel different without Tom Herman. Kliff’s squad looks better as a team than it has at any point in his tenure. Can the Raiders play defense? How do you scheme around Ed Oliver? Do the Cougars have the firepower, after heavy graduation losses, to keep up on the scoreboard? One of these teams may be abottom-25ish squad — good luck on guessing which one ntil they tee it up. This is an old-fashioned Texas football shootout.

NCSU at Florida State (-10.5) 11:00 a.m. Central

Normally losing your starting QB would be a season-killer. It still may be for the ‘Noles. But, owing to inclement weather, this is the first game in three weeks for FSU. That is practically a second fall camp for Jimbo and his true freshman quarterback to prepare. Can the ‘Noles shake off the thorough whipping the Tide gave them and get back in the CFB Playoff discussion? Beating a decent Wolfpack team is a must.

While you shouldn’t watch it, do keep an eye when UMass travels to Tennessee (11 central, -28 UT.) The Vols should absolutely destroy this team, but the Minutemen have a very lethal passing offense, and the Vols’ secondary has been a somewhat shaky this year. Heh, just ask Florida.

Here’s the schedule below (eastern). We’ll be back with your game thread around 2:00 Central. Roll Tide
