College Football Around the SEC: Conference Goes 12-2

New, comments

We are off and running! With a few exceptions, the SEC looked pretty good in the opening week.

In seasons past, I tried a point system based on the quality of the wins as described below. I didn't have a perfect formula or a roomful of computers to help me and it became a bit overwhelming. Thus, I am taking the easy lazy way out for now. Below is the key.

Win-Loss Record key:
  • SEC - conference record
  • P5 - non-SEC record against Power 5
  • MM - record against Mid Majors/Non-Power 5 FBS but projected bowl participant
  • CC - record against cupcakes, FCS and perennial FBS doormats (subject to my whims).

Georgia Bulldogs (1-0, SEC 0-0, P5 0-0, MM 1-0, CC 0-0)

It's the first quarterback controversy of the year. Former 5-star Jacob Eason came in last season as a true freshman and wowed observers in his first few games. He remained starter all season but would have stretches where he would disappear. This year, he returned as starter but the Dawgs under his charge started the App State game with two three and outs. In the third possession he left the game with a knee injury. Enter former 5-star frosh Jake Fromm who energized the team and the stadium. Eason will not play this week against the Irish. If Fromm has a big game and UGA wins, it will be difficult to put Eason back in just because he was the starter.

Florida Gators (0-1, SEC 0-0, P5 0-1, MM 0-0, CC 0-0)

Feleipe Franks was bad. Notre Dame grad-transfer Malik Zaire was worse. Luke Del Rio must be awful because he did not even step on the field. Franks will go back to being the starter this week. IMHO, Jim McElwain just needs to stick it out with the kid and build towards the future.

The offensive line, however, might need some retooling. They were porous at best. Even All-SEC Martez Ivey struggled to hold back the Michigan charge. Center T.J. McCoy was named to the preseason Rimington Award watch list. Four of the starting five had multiple starts last year. Just last Thursday, the 247sports beat writer called this line "one of the best offensive lines in the SEC." In that same article, "McElwain expressed his satisfaction of the offensive line by calling them the strength of the team." Michigan has a very good DL but even so, an OL with such hype and experience should not have struggled so mightily.

Tennessee Volunteers (1-0, SEC 0-0, P5 1-0, MM 0-0, CC 0-0)

Did you see Butch's latest gimmick, the trash can? Apparently, whenever a Vol creates a turnover, he is blessed with the great honor of dunking a football into said receptacle held aloft by some poor Tennessee staffer. DOESN'T THAT JUST FIRE YOU UP??? Funny thing is, he stole the idea from Austin Peay! But I digress. This wonderful revelations leaves UT wide open for so much ridicule about garbage truck worker conventions, on the job training, a place to put their diplomas, etc... Leave us your best in comments below.

Kentucky Wildcats (1-0, SEC 0-0, P5 0-0, MM 1-0, CC 0-0)

The University of Kentucky has become the first SEC school to sell their souls to the Madison Avenue devils. The stadium formerly known as Commonwealth Stadium now has the glamorous moniker of Kroger Field. Sexy, huh?

Missouri Tigers (1-0, SEC 0-0, P5 0-0, MM 0-0, CC 1-0)

Missouri senior defensive tackle A.J. Logan will serve a six-game suspension as part of the ongoing review into the NCAA academic fraud allegations that came up last fall.

South Carolina Gamecocks (1-0, SEC 0-0, P5 1-0, MM 0-0, CC 0-0)

No Respect! For the second week in a row, the Gamecocks are an underdog. Last week, the were a -6½ dog to NC State and won outright. This week, they are down -2½ to a Mizzou team that defeated FCS Missouri State 72-43.

Vanderbilt Commodores (1-0, SEC 0-0, P5 0-0, MM 1-0, CC 0-0)

By defeating Middle Tennessee State, the Commodores snapped a string of five straight season opening losses. Those defeats came to South Carolina twice (2012, 2016), Ole Miss (2013), Temple (2014) and Western Kentucky (2015). Their last opening win was against Elon.

Auburn Tigers (1-0, SEC 0-0, P5 0-0, MM 1-0, CC 0-0)

Despite a 41-7 win over Georgia Southern to to open the season, Jarrett Stidham's Heisman stock took a hit. The Bovada online sportsbook lists Stidham at 33-to-1, down from 20-to-1. The odds of teammate Kamryn Pettway dropped from 33-to-1 to 40-to-1.

Texas A&M Aggies (0-1, SEC 0-0, P5 0-1, MM 0-0, CC 0-0)

One Texas A&M regent has seen enough and wants Kevin Sumlin fired asap. The regent pointed to the head coach's "arrogance and his mishandling of multiple player controversies". Read the full rant here.

Arkansas Razorbacks (1-0, SEC 0-0, P5 0-0, MM 0-0, CC 1-0)

Bret Bielema will face off against a familiar face when they line-up against TCU on Saturday. Former Texas A&M quarterback Kenny Hill now leads the Horned Frogs. In that last meeting in 2014, Hill led that Aggies back from 14 down in the fourth quarter and won on OT. He was 21 for 41 for 386 yards with four touchdowns and a pick.

Mississippi State Bulldogs (1-0, SEC 0-0, P5 0-0, MM 0-0, CC 1-0)

The Bullies had some symmetry going on in the big bad win over Charleston Southern. MSU accumulated 555 yards while yielding only 33. They produced two safeties for two points each = 22. WR Jamal Couch caught 1 pass for 11 yards 1 TD.

Ole Miss Rebels (1-0, SEC 0-0, P5 0-0, MM 1-0, CC 0-0)

It seems nobody can escape this NCAA lasso in Oxford. There are reports that interim head coach Matt Luke will appear before NCAA Committee on Infractions. Although it seems like standard practice for the current head coach of programs referenced in a notice of allegations to attend the hearing, it is just another reminder of the impending doom on the Grove.

LSU Tigers (1-0, SEC 0-0, P5 1-0, MM 0-0, CC 0-0) 0

This is just one man's opinion but it seems to me that Ed Orgeron learned nothing from Leonard Fournette's injury plagued career in Baton Rouge. Derrius Guice carried the ball 27 times in only three quarters against a clearly overmatched BYU team. Guice ran 20 times in the first 32 plays for the Tigers. On the 13-play second possession of the game, Guice was handed the ball 10 times.

Alabama Crimson Tide (1-0, SEC 0-0, P5 1-0, MM 0-0, CC 0-0)

Alabama and Fresno agreed to this game back in June of 2015. The Bulldogs will reportedly receive $1.4 million for the honor of getting pummeled. There is no truth to the reports that Alabama AD Greg Byrne dug the money to pay Fresno out of the couches around the Mal Moore Athletic Facility.
