Why Kyler Murray Will Beat Tua For The Heisman

Ok, I’m going to spoil the suspense. Kyler Murray will win this year's Heisman over Tua. The reason is that Tua got hurt early against UGA which effected his performance. Personally, I feel if we had not made the SECCG then Tua would have won the award. If Tua had not gotten injured, he would have won the award. You can have a bad game and still win this award, but you cannot have a bad game the week before the voting. The voting is too subjective.

There are, of course, four other factors contributing to Murray’s sure victory. First, is the timing. Tua was in the lead for the whole season. But, it is a little easier to come from behind in this award. If you are behind you don’t feel the pressure and your every play is not analyzed like the guy in the lead. Murray timed it perfect. He will win having never been the front runner.

Secondly, Oklahoma sets qb’s up to win the Heisman. This will be their 3rd qb in a relatively short time. Why? Well, they play no defense so the offense gets more try’s. In a 56-51 shoot out the qb for Okie is going to put up some pretty good stats. Since in a Heisman vote it is hard to figure who is better, it is so subjective, and thus many voters just look at the stats.

Third, playing in the Big 12 helps him considerably. Does anyone in the Big 12 play defense? Currently no. I mean if you see how tight Bama’s receivers were covered by UGA and then look at how Oklahoma receivers were not covered at all by Texas, you realize what an advantage a qb has in that league. There are some good teams in the Big 12 besides Oklahoma like Texas, W.V.U., Okie St., but these teams are all offense and they do nothing to hold down a qb like Murray’s stats. AND, (and this is big) since the D in the Big 12 is not good, the odds of Murray getting hurt physically goes down. Last Sat. it looked to me like Texas never even tried to put pressure on Murray. Meanwhile, in the SEC, UGA is pounding Tua.

Finally, there is the "Bo factor." Ever since Bo Jackson hung it up due to injury, the media has been looking for a great two sport athlete. In KM they have just that. Of course he has not played in the NFL, and probably won’t. But right now he is the closest thing to Bo out there and the media loves him. Of course none of this has anything to do with college football, but the Heisman is more a Hypesman than anything else.

All of this is very sad to me because Tua has had the best season for a qb to ever play at Bama. He has played harder competition. He has not padded his stats having been held out the second half of most games just to keep the score down. He has played in spite of being hurt because he is a team player. He lead his team to a perfect season to date and in the regular season no one got within 22 points of the team he was quarter- backing. But, get injured in the final game that results in a mediocre performance and the first 12 games all go out the window, don’t they?

So congratulations Kyler, you are good. I just hope Tua is fully recovered so that in the Orange Bowl you can watch the true best player in the land.
