Two of the world’s worst kept college football secrets were confirmed today when the University of Alabama officially announced the hirings of Dan Enos and Craig Kuligowski to round out the staff. Enos will serve as associate head coach and quarterbacks coach for the Crimson Tide, while Kuligowski will be an associate head coach and head up the defensive line.
ENOS
Enos comes to Tuscaloosa after three seasons as Offensive Coordinator under Bret Bielema at Arkansas, as well as a brief three week stay at Michigan. Previously to that, he was the head coach at Central Michigan from 2010 to 2014, compiling a 26–36 record. Despite receiving a one-year contract extension and pay raise in January 2013, extending his CMU deal through the 2016 season, he resigned to join the Hogs staff in 2015.
Enos both played and coached at Michigan State. He has strong ties to the Midwest states and should be instrumental in recruiting the area.
KULIGOWSKI
Nick Saban never ceases to amaze. It was a longshot that he could find an upgrade to the departing Karl Dunbar at defensive line coach this late in the coaching carousel but he managed to reach out and pluck the best in the business. Kuligowski spent 24 seasons alongside Gary Pinkel at Toledo and Mizzou. While with the Tigers, he developed several underrated prospects and turned them into top draft picks. Among them:
- Charles Harris – 2 star, 1st rd NFL draft pick
- Shane Ray – 3 star, 1st rd
- Aldon Smith – 3 star, 1st rd
- Ziggy Hood – 3 star, 1st rd
- Markus Golden – 3 star juco, 2nd rd
- Kony Ealy – 4 star, 2nd rd
Kuligowski parted ways with Missouri after Barry Odom took over for Pinkel, sending him to Miami to work with Mark Richt the last two seasons.
STAFF SHUFFLE
If you are counting, that gives the Tide 11 assistants - one over the limit. There was some speculation that Joe Pannunzio, who had served as director of football operations for Alabama from 2011 to 2014, would move back to an administrative position. However, it is longtime Saban lieutenant Burton Burns who will be taken off the field. Burns has been on Saban’s Bama staff since the first season in 2007. His new title is Assistant Athletics Director for Football. Pannunzio will take over as the running backs coach with Jeff Banks serving as tight ends coach and special teams coordinator.
