Giving Away Money: Delaware begins taking action; Vegas posts first CFB props

Las Vegas

That was fast.

Less than three weeks after the Supreme Court ousted the federal government from state gambling legislation, the first post-Vegas state has joined the race. And, no, it was not New Jersey, the decade-long complainant against the federal law. Rather, it was Delaware. The tiny coastal state whose economy exists solely to shuffle paper, was — perhaps unsurprisingly — quietly ahead of everyone in the race for customers. (Although, most observers do believe that New Jersey and Mississippi are next up to install a regulatory scheme.) It was an impressive opening day -- with the books dragging down a cool third of a million with limited reserves and limited action.

Now, on to the relatively big news for degenerates. About a month ago, the overseas and offshore books began offering props on win totals for the 2018-2019 CFB season. Yesterday, the first major domestic player got in the game. The props are remarkably similar to the first set of offshore odds. So, if you want to get Alabama at 10 12 , I highly encourage you to do so. I can’t believe that number is not even baiting a push at 11, and smart money will likely move those odds soon. Here was my first set of buys and sells. I’ll add a few more below.

I love Clemson at 10 12. Later in today’s JP we’ll feature an article on Clemson-Bama Round IV. Given the preliminary state of the field, there’s little reason to doubt that the two will clash again in the playoffs. It won’t always be pretty, and there will be some tougher than expected scrapes in the ACC, but this team can win 9 games just playing defense.

Yikes. LSU at 7. That honestly seems about right. It’s closer to a 6-win team than an 8-win club, notwithstanding the addition of Jake Burrow.

Louisville 7. Kind of a flyer here, but the Cardinals start with Alabama, still have all sorts of liabilities on both lines, the middle of the ACC has improved (Wake, NCSU, BC, etc.), there has been zero buzz around Jawon Pass, and there’s the matter of Lamar Jackson chilling in Baltimore now. Six wins seems ambitious.

Tennessee 5 1/2 . Jeremy Pruitt may turn out to be a very good collegiate coach. The odds are not in his favor on that score, but one thing that is apparent is struggle as most first-year coaches learn the ropes. The talent level is already dreck. The first recruiting class did not yield many Day One starters. The schedule is brutal: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, improving USCe, Auburn, West Virginia — leaving absolutely no room for error against the likes of Missouri and Kentucky and Vanderbilt; and, I think they find a way to lose one or more of those. I also suspect, deep down, that Fulmer neither wants nor is going to allow Pruitt to succeed. #HillpeopleWithPitchforks

Nebraska 6. It’s not that I think that the Huskers are world-beaters or have a particular wealth of talent, it’s that the Big Ten West is sooooo soft. The luminaries are Wisconsin, followed by...who? Purdue? Minnesota? Northwestern? Iowa? The Huskers will surprise a few people with the system and a flux of (count ‘em) eight JUCOS and counting. The Akron and Troy games will tell a lot. Both are decent G5 squads. A loss to one or both likely means UNL misses a bowl game. I think they squeak out an ugly 7-5.
