Avery Johnson continues to weave his magic on the recruiting trail, adding four star combo guard Kia Lewis out of Hazel Green, Alabama on Friday. Lewis was originally in the class of 2019 but reclassified and will join the Tide immediately and will be eligible for the 2018-19 season. Lewis is the nation’s ninth ranked point guard, and 39th ranked overall player. The Tide beat out over three dozen teams for Lewis, including Indiana, Kansas, LSU, and Auburn.
Lewis will battle fellow freshman Jared Butler and Avery Johnson, Jr for minutes at the point guard position. The addition of Lewis to Butler, Diante Wood, and Javian Fleming give the Tide a top 20 recruiting class for 2018. The 6’3” 160 pound guard had a fantastic summer on the AAU circuit and has been a major target for Johnson and his staff for three years.
The fourth addition of Johnson’s Tide should be loaded, despite losing the electric Collin Sexton to the NBA after only one year. Sexton was the 8th overall pick in this summer’s draft by the suddenly Lebron-less Cleveland Cavaliers. Returnees include Dazon Ingram, Donta Hall, Herbert Jones, John Petty, Alex Reese, Galin Smith, Tevin Mack, Daniel Giddens, Riley Norris, and Johnson Jr. In other words this team is loaded with long, athletic, fast, versatile players that can play multiple positions.
Lewis should be the team’s primary ball handler as he has more ball skills than Butler and Johnson, but can slide over to the two spot as well. This was an amazing feat by Johnson and staff to add such a top flight player at this late date. Get ready folks, Coleman is about to be rocking!
Buckle Up, and Roll Tide.
