Mac Jones has writ his name in Crimson flame already. With 1:45 left in the third quarter of a 49-0 beatdown against Louisiana-Lafayette, Jones lined up in the shotgun at the Alabama 6 yard line. They ran the same sort of RPO we’ve seen Tua Tagovailoa throw a touchdown pass on.
The nickel back and the linebackers were sucked in by the possible hand off. Jones made the easy read, kept the ball, and fired a dart to Jaylen Waddle on a slant. One safety ran himself out of the play, and Waddle hit the boost to beat the other. 94 yards later, Waddle scored the only Alabama points of the second half.
That 94 yard Jones-to-Waddle touchdown is tied for the second longest touchdown pass in school history with Freddie Kitchens’ 94 yard touchdown toss to Michael Vaughn in the 1996 SEC Championship against Florida . Only AJ McCarron’s 99 yard touchdown pass to Amari Cooper in the 2013 Iron Bowl was longer. This makes Jones’ touchdown throw the longest in a winning effort in school history.
Not bad for a third stringer.
